Chapter 412
Alex’s voice shook. “Nicole, are you sure?”
She shook her head. “It’s just a guess.”
“But if it’s true… Then we won’t even have a way to survive.”
Nicole didn’t reply.
The Prescotts had no medicine. After his stomach was flushed out, Isaac could only ride it out.
Nicole had done what she could. She turned to leave.
Alex stopped her. “Nicole, this is a serious matter. Every day, seafood and seawater are coming into Westbridge. If there’s really a problem, God knows how many people could die. Should we report it to the community center?”
Nicole kept her tone even. “This is only my suspicion. I don’t have proof. If it turns out to be nothing, I’d just be spreading rumors. Best case, I get questioned. Worst case, the vendors come after me first. Isaac is stable. I’m heading back.”
Once Nicole stepped out of Building 1, she let out a long breath.
She hadn’t expected it to happen this fast.
In her last life, she had been scraping by, eating bark and dirt. She never had access to seafood. She stayed away from people, afraid of being treated like livestock. There was no way she would’ve known.
It hadn’t even been two months since they had come back from the coast, and things had already changed this
much.
The thought sent a chill through her.
She had 40 tons of fresh seafood, as well as tens of thousands of pounds of dried goods and sea salt in her storage space. Could any of it still be safe?
No wonder a bag of salt had once traded for 30 pounds of grain. It must’ve gone bad.
She frowned. “What happens if you eat something infected?”
Zeph shook his head. He didn’t know.
In his past life, rescue missions had consumed nearly all of his time. It was one life-or-death situation after another. When he wasn’t working, he was asleep, leaving little room to notice anything else.
“They were handing out seafood rice cakes during relief runs, but those were probably old stock. I never heard about poisonings back then. Only rumors years later.”
Maybe it had happened, but at the time, no one was looking for causes. Too many people were dying, and survival itself was a daily struggle.
Nicole remembered that by the third year after the disasters, coastal salt had become extremely scarce. That meant the authorities must have realized something and restricted its use.
She just didn’t know if they had figured it out yet this time.
Seeing her expression, Zeph tried to ease her mind. “We did what we could. We can’t control the rest.”

Nicole glanced at him. “Everything you know about what’s coming… You told the authorities?”
He didn’t answer. He just took her hand and led her home.
Back inside, Nicole disinfected with alcohol and changed her clothes.

That night, Alex knocked on the Prescotts’ door. “Isaac, how are you feeling?”
Isaac looked much better, though still weak. He gave a tired smile. “Got lucky this time. Guess it’s not my day to go.”
Ethan lowered his head. “Dad, this is my fault. I almost…”
