Chapter 413
If the disasters hadn’t happened, Alex and Isaac could’ve gone to the food safety office or the health department.
But those were gone now. The community center could barely keep up with its own workload. There was no way it could handle something like this.
They were still talking it through when Ethan spoke up.
“What about the police? They took down the Drakebane Guild, then shut down two private bases, and even returned confiscated supplies to the public. That kind of operation takes coordination across departments.
“Even if this isn’t their jurisdiction, they can at least point us in the right direction or pass it along. That’s better than us running around blind.”
They both nodded. It made sense.
“Smart kid,” Isaac said.
Alex added, “Isaac, how about we go tomorrow? If this is real, it could save a lot of people. We’ve lived through better days, and we were still getting relief supplies from the city not that long ago. If we keep quiet about something like this, I’d have a hard time living with myself.”
Isaac agreed. “Alright. We’ll take the squid with us.”
With that settled, Isaac said, “Nicole saved my life. What should I give her as thanks?”
These days, no one had much. The Prescotts were barely getting by, father and son both thin. There wasn’t much in the house worth giving.
Alex didn’t sugarcoat it.
“Nicole doesn’t strike me as someone who cares about that kind of thing. Honestly, she probably prefers not being bothered. Put together some sweet potatoes. If you run into her, give them to her. If she doesn’t take them, don’t push it. It’s the thought that counts. If she ever needs help, you can repay her then.”
Isaac nodded. That matched his impression.
Zeph and Nicole kept people at arm’s length. Not because they were unfriendly, but because they were careful.
In a world like this, how many people were willing to trust strangers?
There was nothing wrong with that.
After several nights of poor sleep, Jasper didn’t make it to the office until close to noon.
His assistant came in to report, then paused at the door.
“Two men came by this morning with a strange story. They brought half a squid and claimed it might be infected with some kind of ancient virus. Said it nearly killed someone.”
Ordinarily, it wouldn’t fall under the police.
After receiving two anonymous letters before, however, Jasper had started paying attention to anything tied to ” predictions.” He had made it clear that anything like that should be reported to him immediately.

Ancient viruses had been mentioned in those letters.
And now, it was showing up.
“Where are they?”
“They came early. They’ve already left.”
