Chapter 414

“What are you complaining about?” Jasper shot his assistant a look. “Isn’t that the whole idea? Something happens, you call the police. If they don’t come to us, who else are they supposed to go to?”

“Yeah, you’re right,” the assistant said quickly.

He was about to slip out when Jasper stopped him again. “How’s recruitment for the patrol unit?”

“Pretty good. A lot more people have been signing up lately.”

Word had spread about the weapons seized from those private bases. That alone drew people in.

“We’re short on manpower. Pick a group with solid skills from the patrol unit and fast-track them into officers”

At the agreed time, Nicole went to the trading street to meet Weasel.

Business was still brisk. Seawater sold fast, and plenty of stalls were pushing dried seafood.

Nicole checked several vendors. Most of the goods looked normal, but some were clearly off.

People still bought them, just not many. The ones coming here were mostly lower-tier survivors. They didn’t have much to spend.

As for whether it would kill them… No one really knew.

Nicole felt the weight of it, but she wasn’t foolish enough to interfere. Not unless she wanted trouble. Even if she risked it, no one would believe her.

Standing in the crowd with a mask on, she was still spotted by Weasel.

“Hey, Nicole.”

Nicole looked at him. “You’re not selling seawater or dried goods anymore?”

Weasel glanced around, then pulled her aside.

“Since Tomlinson Enterprise’s seafood operations collapsed, the boss got out of that business.

“Well, he didn’t stop completely at first. It just wasn’t easy to rebuild those channels. He checked out Ashmont and Graywater. Both still had seafood, but they were far away, and deals like that took time. He had to be sure we weren’t walking into a trap. And before we could even lock down a deal, something happened.”

“What happened?”

“Seafood’s always graded. Graywater had overfished until stocks were nearly gone. After the tsunami, everything bounced back overnight. Of course, the best went straight to the rich. Then people started dying. Several in a row.”

Sven had good instincts. He pulled out immediately.

“We might flip goods, sure, but we don’t cheat people. If the boss won’t touch it, none of us will either.”

Weasel lowered his voice.

“Things are getting worse everywhere. Seafood’s not safe anymore. We had the hailstorm, then the boiling rain. Who knows when the next earthquake’s coming? You be careful, alright? I still wanna keep doing business with you.”

Living was already hard enough.

He didn’t want to lose a good partner, or vanish one day himself.

Nicole nodded. “Deal. You’ll be the first I call.”

She got to the point. “Did you find the seeds I asked for?”

Weasel grinned. “For you? I’d go through hell to get them.”

He pulled out two bags.

“Took some work, but here. Two-year-old stock. Five pounds of rice seed and five pounds of sticky rice seed. See if any of it’ll sprout.”

If rice hadn’t required so much water to grow, there would’ve been no way those seeds would still be around
