Dealing with someone reasonable made things easier.

Nicole headed back to Building 5 in a lighter mood.

Alex’s household was running low on salt as well. When he got home, he poured the sea salt into an iron pan and . roasted it for half an hour, then dissolved a small amount in warm water and drank it.

He couldn’t say he wasn’t uneasy. But since it had come from Zeph and Nicole, it felt more reliable than anything/ he could get outside.

Over the past few days, he had seen plenty of salt in the markets. None of it looked like this. The color was off, the crystals uneven, and it carried too many impurities.

Three days later, the fatigue in his body eased, and his strength began to return.

Relieved, he got on the radio and contacted them, hoping to buy more.

“Captain Landon, they don’t have much left. It started at one pound of salt for 12 pounds of sweet potatoes. Zeph had to call in old favors just to bring it down. At most, a few hundred pounds.”

Nicole stepped in without missing a beat. “I’ll try to push for you. If we cap it at three pounds per person, it should work. Price stays at market rate. One pound of salt for ten pounds of sweet potatoes. That’s as low as it gets.

Alex understood. Favors had limits. He thanked them several times. “That’s more than enough. I appreciate it.”

Five hundred pounds of salt at once was a huge relief. Zeph and Nicole clearly had access to things others didn’t.

Alex felt a little embarrassed to ask, but for the sake of Oakhaven Gardens’ residents, he swallowed his pride. ” What about seeds?”

“We can get some corn and vegetable seeds,” Nicole said. “A few pounds total. But after this long, we can’t guarantee germination.”

Alex didn’t mind. Older seeds always had lower success rates. They would be lucky to get any at all, so he wasn’t about to complain. He quickly accepted the offer.

The promised supply came through. Alex kept nothing for himself; he announced the deal openly and started taking registrations.

The response was immediate. Everyone signed up. Some even added their children’s names to increase their share.

They didn’t have a choice. Living without salt was too hard.

Larger families could stock more than ten pounds. Used carefully, it could last for years.

While things heated up on Alex’s end, Nicole stayed busy as well.

The seeds in storage were too new. Others might not notice, but Alex would.

Zeph mixed in dust, working it in by hand until they looked worn and aged.

On the day of the trade, the two of them drove out briefly, then returned in a truck loaded with salt and seeds. They exchanged them for thousands of pounds of sweet potatoes.

The harvest from the extreme heat hadn’t been impressive, but they didn’t plan to eat them. They could always

trade them later.

Families came one by one to collect their share.

Alex reminded everyone patiently how to handle the salt. “It’s safe, but better to be cautious. Don’t try to save on firewood.”

There weren’t many seeds, but he distributed them as evenly as possible.
