Chapter 451
After about half an hour, the crowd gradually settled.
Alex spoke again, his tone steady. “If it feels like too much, you can stay in Oakhaven Gardens. Just be ready to deal with whatever risks come later. Everyone’s struggling. Personally, I think staying together is still safer. What do you think?”
“Captain Landon, are you moving?”
“I can’t afford a place yet either, but I’ll find a way to earn the points and go.”
“If you’re going, then my family’s going, too.”
“We want to go, but how are we supposed to earn that many points?”
Seeing how firm Alex was, even those who had hesitated began to waver. After a moment, hands went up one by
one.
Most of them had only been here for the past two years. They trusted him.
Without Oakhaven Gardens, many of them might not have made it this far. If they were going to stick together, it had to be with people they knew.
They all remembered the gangs at the resettlement site.
To take over apartments in Oakhaven Gardens, the gangs had grabbed anyone who was alone or vulnerable and thrown them off the building without a second thought.
It hadn’t happened just once or to just one victim. They even murdered members of the staff.
Staying alone or leaving meant too much risk.
There wasn’t really a choice. Agreeing was the only way to survive.
Except for Zeph and Nicole, who weren’t present, everyone voted to move.
The next question was how to earn the points.
Alex had already thought it through on the way back. He had a plan.
Working alone was too dangerous. Better to organize into teams.
“We split into groups. The stronger men salvage from the ruins and collect steel and metal. Those who aren’t suited for that can dig sand from the river…”
They didn’t have vehicles, but Alex would try to coordinate with the authorities for transport.
The rest, mostly women and children, were assigned to clear fields and plant crops. They would grow as much corn and sweet potatoes as they could. The harvest would go toward paying for their homes.
Leafy vegetables grew the fastest, so they could plant multiple rounds and dry them for storage.
Everyone knew their job, the work was divided up clearly, and group leaders were chosen without anyone objecting.
The residents trusted Alex. They believed that if they worked together, they could secure a place in the new district.

Sharing a cramped space wasn’t ideal, but having no place at all was worse.
By the time Nicole returned, the meeting had just ended. Alex stopped them and quickly went over everything.
As expected, they had no intention of sharing housing.
“We won’t be joining this plan,” Zeph said directly.
Alex nodded. He understood. “Thank you again for the seeds.”.
