Chapter 462

Woodworking took time and effort. Once the cost of tung oil was included, Tom asked for eighty pounds of sweet potatoes.
Nicole pretended to think it over before nodding. “Alright.”
Two days later, she drove over in a truck and unloaded the timber at the entrance to Building 3.
“My friend wants wooden boats, too, plus buckets and basins.”
As things kept changing, it was getting harder to bring out anything high-tech. She had to rely on old-fashioned supplies to keep up appearances.
Another 160 pounds of sweet potatoes were enough to make Tom grin from ear to ear. He called his son over right away to help.
They agreed to deliver the order in two batches, the first in two weeks and the second in four.
Nicole had to admit the boats were well made. The planks were thick, the structure was sturdy, and the finish was smooth. Even the oars had been sealed with tung oil.
She tested them in her storage space. Not a drop leaked in.
So she went back to Tom. “My friend resold the boats and wants six more. Keep the quality the same. There may be more orders later.”
The new order delighted the Bates family. They were one step closer to saving enough grain for a house.
By then, night had disappeared completely. After some adjustment, most of the residents in Oakhaven Gardens had gotten used to it, while the patrol team switched to two shifts and focused mainly on guarding the crops.
The herbs in the black soil garden were growing well, especially herbaceous plants like creekfern, which had shot up noticeably faster than the others.
Nicole had already taken several cuttings and expanded the patch to about 150 square feet. It wouldn’t be long before she could harvest and dry them.
Wyrmleaf grew more slowly, but it had started branching out, with several fresh buds pushing through the soil.
Nicole took photos every few days to track its growth, then compared them over and over with the illustrations in her medical books.
It really did look more and more like the same plant.
Still, there were differences.
Zeph sounded certain. “It’s the one. I’m sure.”
Fine. If he said so, she would trust him. He had always been steady, and he wasn’t the type to speak without confidence.
Now that they had identified one herb, what about the other?
Nicole asked, “Where did you search for it before?”
“Mount Cedar.”

Mount Cedar was one of the state’s four great mountains and one of the region’s seven legendary highlands, famous for its caves, springs, steep terrain, and summit mist that lingered all year. It was in a county under Halloway’s jurisdiction.
Nicole was surprised. “That’s hundreds of miles away. How did you end up searching there?”

“The smog kept getting worse, so the professor searched nearby areas on foot. He crossed mountains and rivers, and in the end, Mount Cedar was the only place left to try.”
Somehow, they had actually found it.
Now that polar day had arrived, traveling was a little safer, and Nicole was tempted. “How about we go?”
Back then, even Zeph had been infected, never mind her and Poppy. Nicole had no intention of coughing her lungs
out.
Zeph was quiet for a moment before saying, “I’ll go. You and Poppy stay here.”
“Why?”
“The earthquake didn’t destroy Mount Cedar, but the mountain is extremely unstable. One wrong step could collapse the ground under you or send rocks crashing down.”
In his previous life, the escort team had lost three people while searching for the medicine.
Zeph didn’t want anything to happen to Nicole and Poppy.
“That’s exactly why I need to go with you. If we can’t get out of the way in time, we can still enter the storage space.”
He had been lucky in his previous life, but that didn’t mean he would be lucky this time.
