Chapter 463
Nicole heard Zeph out, but she didn’t back down. “The conditions were terrible back then. Even if it used to grow there, it might have died off.”
Things were different now. After so many waves of disaster, the world had finally been given a little room to breathe. Even wild greens had started growing along the Westbridge River.
Even if they didn’t find that specific herb, they might find others. The trip wouldn’t be wasted.
After all, the medicine she and Zeph had stockpiled was limited. It couldn’t cover every possible illness. Sickness didn’t wait for a convenient time. What if they got sick one day and needed something they didn’t have?
Besides, lying around every day had gotten old. They could go out, look for medicine, and stretch their legs at the same time. Why not?
Zeph agreed.
There was no point waiting for another day, so they left right away.
Nicole opened the rabbit hutch.
“Do you want to come with me or stay home?”
Maybe she was imagining things, but ever since she had taken them out last time, the rabbits had been acting like she owed them an apology.
In the past, they would have hopped over one by one and crowded around her feet, fighting for attention.
Now, look at them. They treated her like air, chewing hay without even bothering to lift their heads.
Fine. She had stocked up on plenty of rabbit meat over the past three years anyway, cooked every way imaginable. Enough to last a long time.
Nicole left them several big bundles of dried hay and plenty of clean water, then walked away without another thought.
The roads were rough, but with Poppy and Cola coming along, the scooter wasn’t safe enough. They had to take
the Hummer.
The pavement was cracked, and rubble blocked the way. Every stretch took effort.
Fortunately, Westbridge was famous for its ring roads. As long as they were willing to loop around, they could still reach their destination.
When the highway split open, they detoured onto smaller roads. They stopped and started the whole way, and it took them four hours to cover fifty miles.
They ran into two groups of roadside bandits along the way. Nicole sat in the passenger seat and didn’t bother negotiating. She rolled down the window and brought out the submachine gun.
The robbers backed down without another word and quickly moved the roadblocks aside.
“Take care. Safe travels.”
Once they reached the dense woods at the foot of the mountain, they let Poppy and Cola out for some air. Then, Nicole put the Hummer into the storage space.

Mount Graypine hadn’t collapsed, but the film studio, shops, and everything else at the foot of the mountain had been reduced to rubble. It was strange to imagine how crowded the place used to be.
They had followed the winding hiking trail for almost half an hour when a voice suddenly rang out up ahead.
“Help!”
Men and women were shouting, their voices sharp with panic.
Anyone who came to Mount Graypine at a time like this probably wasn’t ordinary.
Nicole took out the binoculars and saw several men and women trapped in a ravine ahead, surrounded by a group of thugs with knives.
Seriously? It had been three years since the apocalypse. Anyone who still dared to come out without the skills to stay alive had clearly been protected too well.
Nicole said nothing and handed the binoculars to Zeph.
To her surprise, he took one look, drew his gun, and headed toward them without hesitation.
His reaction startled Nicole, but she swallowed the question before it left her mouth.
