Chapter 465

Traveling with Mitchell’s group slowed Zeph and Nicole down, but it also made the trip much more productive.
Zeph thought it over for a moment before saying, “We still haven’t found everything. We’ll head back tomorrow.”
The group continued up the mountain at an easy pace.
Halfway up, Mitchell’s eyes suddenly lit up. “Zeph; this is it! The white ridgeflower you’re looking for!”
There was only one seedling, smaller than half a palm. It was still too young to use as medicine and needed at least another six months of careful cultivation.
Mitchell dug it out with extreme care and handed it to Zeph, explaining how to raise it as he worked.
They rested when they got tired and added or removed layers whenever the weather shifted. By the end, it looked less like hiking and more like they were doing quick changes backstage.
At noon, it had been close to 104 degrees. Now, before night had even fallen, the temperature had dropped to nearly freezing.
The herbs were too valuable to risk, and Mitchell was worried the seedlings would freeze. He took off his hiking jacket, ready to shield them from the wind and cold.
Nicole thought for a second, then pulled an insulation sheet from her bag.
“Use this.”
These people were the professor’s strongest assistants. If they got sick and died out here, the anti-smog virus medicine might never be developed.
Mitchell thanked her again and again, and the rest of the team quickly moved in to help protect the seedlings.
Time mattered. No one complained about being tired, and no one stopped because of the cold.
The weather was cold, but after the deep freeze, 32 degrees hardly counted as a disaster anymore. It was the constant temperature swings that wore them down, leaving their bodies feeling wrong.
Their heads were heavy, their legs weak, and every muscle ached. It felt too much like the start of a fever or a cold. They quickly started a fire, boiled water, and forced down some food.
Nicole and Zeph were fine. Their bodies were in much better shape than everyone else’s.
The two little ones were fine, too. Protected by their temperature-regulating clothes, they hadn’t even broken a sweat.
“Why don’t we rest for a while?”
Once it got close to Nicole’s usual bedtime, sleepiness started creeping in. Besides, the trip had worn them out.
Mitchell and the others had no objection, so everyone began setting up tents.
While they warmed themselves with food and hot water, Nicole casually steered the conversation toward liver and lung disease.
“Mitchell, I have a relative who used to live in a city with terrible smog. Now that he’s older, his liver and lungs aren’t doing well. Do you know any medicine that might help?”

“Liver and lung damage is hard to recover from. Modern medicine doesn’t offer much either. Alternative medicine takes time. You have to treat it slowly…”
Mitchell gave her several prescriptions, including some proven folk remedies. Every one of them was meant to support the lungs and liver.
Before the apocalypse, an expert at his level would have charged hundreds just for a hospital consultation. His appointments would have been limited, booked three months out, and almost impossible to get unless you were both lucky and fast…
Nicole listened carefully and memorized every prescription.
He named plenty of herbs, but wyrmleaf wasn’t among them.
Nicole could only make her hint more obvious. “My relative asked me to look for wyrmleaf this time. He said it’s a very effective folk remedy. Does it really work?”
