Chapter 475
“We’re heading out in the next couple of days,” Nicole replied. “We’ll pick them up while we’re out.”
Isaac nodded. “Alright. Just don’t wait too long. I’m worried they might stop handing them out.”
That evening, Zeph came out of the study. “There are more people outside. They might make their move tonight.”
Polar day meant there was no night, but most people’s body-clocks hadn’t adjusted. By this hour, they were naturally getting sleepy, making it the perfect time to attack.
Nicole went to bed and had Cola keep watch from the balcony.
Around 3 a.m., Cola nudged her awake.
“Woof!”
The moment she pulled back the curtain, she saw chaos unfolding outside. A steady stream of armed people was converging on Oakhaven Gardens.
Nicole quickly grabbed her binoculars.
Men, women, old people, and even children were among them. Their clothes were filthy and ragged, and their expressions were blank but greedy.
One look at their condition told the story. They had started out as refugees before turning into violent scavengers. There had to be more than 300 of them.
There was no way that many violent scavengers had gathered without someone orchestrating it from behind the
scenes.
What’s more, they clearly knew Oakhaven Gardens had gasoline and a sprayer. Instead of charging in recklessly, they surrounded the community without attacking.
They simply held their positions.
Nicole was so angry she could’ve exploded. “What are they trying to do?”
Zeph calmly analyzed the situation. “They’re waiting for the people in Oakhaven Gardens to walk right into their trap.”
If only a handful of residents rushed out, they would surround and kill them. If too many came out, they would scatter. And if no one came, they would steal the crops instead.
Nicole was speechless.
It was just like monkeys raiding a cornfield. Chase them away, and they would run. Turn your back, and they would come right back. Keep doing that long enough, and eventually, the farmers would wear themselves down.
The worst part wasn’t getting robbed once. It was knowing they would keep coming back.
With harvest still weeks away, the people of Oakhaven Gardens had every reason to worry.
Sure enough, the game of cat and mouse began. Wielding clubs and sticks, the residents poured out of Oakhaven Gardens, and the scavengers immediately scattered.
The moment the residents retreated, they came right back, constantly testing the limits.

If no one stopped them, they would rush straight into the fields and start stealing.
The scavengers had nothing left to lose. The residents had homes and crops worth protecting. That alone put all the psychological pressure on Oakhaven Gardens.
All they had to do was wear the residents down until they made one bad decision. That would be the beginning of
the end.
Nicole had no idea what Alex was thinking, but she was furious just watching those scoundrels.
Zeph stayed calm. He carefully studied the scavengers causing the trouble and quickly figured out the key to their
tactics.
They were well organized. Each group covered a different direction, with a leader taking turns provoking the residents to wear them down.
“Nicole, get my sniper rifle.”
The balcony wasn’t a good firing position. Zeph headed upstairs.
“Come on. I’ll let you get some live practice.”
He had taught her the basics long ago, but she had never fired at a real target.
Nicole was instantly interested.
They went up to the tenth floor, opened a window, and set up the rifle.
After lining up the shot, Zeph said, “Two o’clock. The guy in the orange shirt.”
Nicole looked through the binoculars. “Found him.”
The words had barely left her mouth when the suppressed sniper rifle cracked.
The man in orange dropped where he stood, and the scavengers who had been swaggering around froze in shock.
H-He was dead… A headshot!
Zeph stepped aside. “Your turn.”
Nicole eagerly took the rifle while Zeph coached her from beside her. “Twelve o’clock. The one in the red shirt.”
