The Apocalypse Survival Manual (Three Days Before Doomsday, I Stockpiled Billions) novel Chapter 476

Chapter 476

There was a traitor. Someone had sold them out.

A fourth shot rang out.

Then a fifth.

Only after the scavengers fell back to the distant ruins did the gunfire finally stop.

For a beginner like Nicole, this was no easy assignment.

Zeph lowered his rifle. “Let them catch their breath.”

Poppy and Cola had been watching from behind them. The little girl, especially, couldn’t hide the envy in her eyes. “Zeph, I wanna shoot, too!”

It wasn’t that Zeph didn’t want to teach her. Sniper rounds were limited, and she was still too small to handle the rifle properly. “No rush. Next time, I promise.”

The rifle was fitted with a suppressor, and the shots came from so far away that when the first man dropped, Alex hadn’t even realized what had happened.

Then a second fell. Then a third…

By then, even an idiot would’ve figured it out.

Watching the mob retreat for the time being, Alex couldn’t help marveling. Once again, Zeph and Nicole had saved Oakhaven Gardens almost single-handedly.

It was a debt he could never hope to repay.

After they finished shooting, they drew the curtains and went back to bed.

Their sleep schedule was completely upside down, so they didn’t wake until after 10 a.m. After washing up, they had brunch.

Poppy was out on the terrace watering the peanuts and sweet potatoes after the dishes were done when she suddenly stiffened.

“Zeph, they’re back!”

A pack of starving wolves wasn’t about to give up on a flock of fat sheep after one failed hunt.

Instead of opening fire immediately, Zeph took the opportunity to teach Nicole how to spot the person in charge in what looked like a chaotic crowd.

Eyes, body language, hand signals, clothing, even the way someone carried themselves could all reveal who was giving the orders.

Clearly, after yesterday’s failure, they had replaced their leaders and came back for another try. They moved forward cautiously, probing as they crept closer.

The tactics had changed, but the fundamentals hadn’t. Calmly scanning the disorderly crowd, Zeph quickly picked out the people who needed to die.

Nicole caught on fast. She was still an amateur compared to him, but surviving two apocalypses had sharpened her instincts far beyond those of an ordinary person. After carefully studying the crowd, she marked the targets

Zeph nodded approvingly. “Not bad. When I was starting out, I was only about 90% accurate.”

They went up to the tenth floor, set up the sniper rifle, and dropped another five people, one after another.

Nicole turned in a flawless performance before slinging the rifle over her shoulder and heading downstairs.

Poppy looked crestfallen.

What happened to “next time”? Zeph was a liar!

Women tended to notice these things more easily than men. During dinner, Nicole picked up on Poppy’s disappointment.

After closing the bedroom door, she quietly reminded Zeph, “Poppy’s getting older. You can’t brush her off like you used to. She may not complain, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t hurt. You need to pay more attention.”

Never having been good with children, Zeph reflected on what he had done. Later, he taught Poppy how to use the sniper rifle.

It wasn’t loaded, but Poppy was thrilled anyway. Every word of praise from Zeph made her eyes shine.

Zeph ruffled her hair, feeling a twinge of guilt. He would have to be more thoughtful with her from now on.

On the third day, the troublemakers came back again. It was starting to feel like a zombie survival game.

This time, no one wore bright, flashy clothes. Looking even more desperate than before, they split into two groups and charged straight toward the cornfields, determined to steal the crop.

The residents had been sitting on their anger for days. Weapons in hand, they surged forward to meet the attackers head-on.
