Chapter 484
Nicole and Zeph had planned to take their time and build everything properly, but there was no polite way to turn down the help.
“Alright,” Nicole said. “We’ll cover the meals and pay everyone in grain.”
Sven waved it off. “Don’t spoil them. Their contracts are still in my hands.”
He called the workers over for a break, then turned to the couple with obvious curiosity. “So what’s the renovation plan?”
Nicole didn’t hide anything. She laid it out for him: build a high perimeter wall, install greenhouses on the roo and in the backyard, then grow vegetables and raise chickens and ducks.
Sven almost dropped his cigarette again.
“Everyone else is putting in swimming pools, and you two are planting vegetables?”
“We spent everything we had just buying this place. We don’t have food to waste on luxury projects,” Nicole answered matter-of-factly. “Not having a pool won’t kill me. Missing a few meals will.”
Sven burst out laughing. “Fair enough. Forget pools. Growing vegetables and raising chickens make a lot more sense. Once you’re done, I’ll copy your setup.”
Neither of them ever wasted resources, especially Nicole. She never made decisions that put herself at a disadvantage.
Three years into the apocalypse, countless wealthy people had already lost everything, yet Nicole’s life had only gotten better. If she was doing it this way, there had to be a reason.
But when Sven heard they planned to line the top of the wall with broken glass, he looked unconvinced.
“Why bother? It’s a hassle, and it won’t stop much. I’ll get you enough electric fencing to go around the whole property.”
It wasn’t that Nicole wanted to make things difficult. Fencing an entire villa took a tremendous amount of electric fencing. Three years into the apocalypse, that wasn’t the kind of thing ordinary people could just find.
Of course, Sven wasn’t ordinary. There were very few supplies he couldn’t get his hands on.
Nicole smiled. “Then we’ll be counting on you.”
You couldn’t just build the wall however you wanted. Too tall, and it might become unstable. Too short, and it wouldn’t offer much protection.
After estimating the ideal height, they asked Sven to source the fencing, and they would pay him in grain.
“No problem,” Sven agreed without hesitation. “If you need anything else, just let me know. I’ll round it all up.”
Most of the other materials were already on hand. The only thing neither of them knew how to do was assemble the glass greenhouses.
“That’s easy,” Sven said. “Bob knows how. I’ll send him over.”
It was getting late. Seeing Weasel and the others still hard at work, Nicole decided to put together dinner.
“I’ll cook. Nothing fancy, so don’t get your hopes up.”

Sven had eaten her cooking before and was already looking forward to it. He shrugged off his jacket, rolled up his sleeves, and joined the work.
Nicole cooked while Poppy and Cola helped.
And when she said nothing fancy, she meant it. She served sweet potatoes, rice, several home-cooked vegetable dishes, and a big bowl of sweet potato greens. There was plenty of salt, but very little oil.
When dinner was ready, Nicole had Poppy call everyone over.
Weasel and the others had brought their own bowls and utensils. None of the big guys stood on ceremony. They loaded up their bowls, found a spot to sit, and dug in.
“Wow, this is amazing!”
Half-starved from the day’s work, Weasel shoveled food into his mouth. He earned decent money, but with a wife and kids to feed, his family couldn’t afford full meals every day.
Nicole’s cooking wasn’t just delicious. It was actually filling.
Unlike his wife’s cooking, which was barely fit for pigs….and he still had to pretend he loved it.
The others felt exactly the same, Sven included.
Food had never been a problem for him, but cooking definitely was. Most days, one of his men handled the kitchen. Compared to Nicole’s cooking, their meals barely counted as edible.
“Zeph,” Sven said, “you really hit the jackpot with Nicole.”
Zeph nodded without the slightest hesitation. “I must be the luckiest man alive.”
