Chapter 487
Nicole took 30 fertilized eggs out of her storage: 10 chicken eggs, 10 duck eggs, and 10 goose eggs, then carefully loaded them into the incubator.
Three years of disasters had nearly exhausted the eggs she had stockpiled before the apocalypse. Their reserves of chicken, duck, and goose meat were running low as well. It was time to rebuild the supply.
If nothing unexpected happened, they could probably stay in the villa for another six or seven years. As long as they successfully raised the birds, storing away several more years’ worth of poultry wouldn’t be difficult.
Zeph nodded. “Take out some lumber tomorrow. I’ll build coops and keep them outside.”
Nicole smiled. “You know how?”
“Nothing I can’t learn.”
Three years of surviving the apocalypse had transformed Zeph from a man who couldn’t cook, grow vegetables, or manage basic housework into someone who could build walls, plaster them, and handle just about any construction job.
At this point, there wasn’t much left he couldn’t figure out.
Nicole clicked her tongue.
Men really can’t take a compliment. Praise them once, and they start thinking they can do anything.
Determined to take him down a notch, she snorted. “Don’t get too full of yourself.”
Without warning, Zeph leaned over and stole a kiss.
“I’m even more confident about something else,” he murmured. “Want me to prove it?”
Nicole’s eyes widened.
Wait. That was definitely not where she had expected this conversation to go.
By the time Nicole realized where this was headed, it was already too late. The bedroom door clicked shut, the lock turned, and the curtains were drawn.
She let out a helpless sigh. “You weren’t like this before.”
“Wasn’t I?” Zeph replied, opening the bedside drawer. “You just didn’t know me well enough.”
She had to admit it. The man was dangerous.
When they first met, he looked so serious and dependable. She never would’ve guessed there was a completely different side to him.
They got a little carried away and ended up sleeping in.
By the time they finished washing up, Poppy had already made breakfast. The rich aroma filled the house.
Good thing the perimeter wall was so high. Otherwise, the smell would’ve drifted straight into the neighbors’ yards. 1
They ate breakfast while listening to the radio.
The latest government broadcast announced that the first batch of homes had been completed. Starting today,

anyone with enough points could apply to purchase one. The next phase of construction was already planned to help relieve the housing shortage.
Another round of hiring had also begun for the government-run store, food processing plant, lime factory, plantations, and security patrols. Several civil service positions had opened as well, with qualified applicants encouraged to apply.
The new district was gradually settling into normal operations.
Nicole was only half-paying attention. There was no way she was getting a job. She intended to spend as many years as possible happily unemployed.
They had just finished breakfast when a car horn sounded outside.
Sven arrived with his son, Brandon Lindberg.
“My place is still under construction, and it’s not safe for the kid there. Would you mind letting him stay here for a while?”
As more survivors moved into the new district, the old neighborhoods were becoming increasingly dangerous. Sven spent every day supervising the renovation of his villa and didn’t feel comfortable leaving Brandon home alone.
Sven’s precious only son looked about nine years old. Fair-skinned and handsome, he wore a neatly tailored little suit with an oversized backpack slung over his shoulders.
