The Apocalypse Survival Manual (Three Days Before Doomsday, I Stockpiled Billions) novel Chapter 486

Chapter 486

Seeing the hesitant looks on everyone’s faces, Sven couldn’t help laughing.

“What are you all looking at me for? She paid you. Take it.”

He would’ve preferred they refused, but every one of them had a family to support. Pride wasn’t worth letting their wives and children go hungry.

When it was Weasel’s turn to collect his grain, Nicole smiled.

“So, did you buy a place?”

“I did.” Weasel grinned from ear to ear. “If you hadn’t kept sending business my way, I never would’ve been able to afford it.”

They all had enough points. What they were short on was grain, and Sven had covered the difference for everyone.

Looking thoroughly pleased with himself, Weasel added, “Our place is right across from the police station. Once we finish renovating it, you two have to come by.”

It was one of the most desirable locations in the entire district. They never would’ve gotten it on their own. Sven had pulled strings and greased the right palms to secure it.

Nicole nearly choked.

“You make your living buying low and selling high, and you still choose to live across from the police station? You’ve got some nerve. Aren’t you worried they’ll raid your place one day?”

Weasel puffed out his chest. “That’s where you’re wrong. The most dangerous place is the safest place.”

What a small world.

Nicole never would’ve guessed that she and Zeph, Oakhaven Gardens, and even Weasel’s group would all end up occupying nearly an entire apartment building.

On the upside, everyone already knew each other, making major conflicts far less likely.

With the biggest job finished, Weasel and the others packed up their tools and headed straight to Sven’s villa, throwing themselves into his renovation with the same enthusiasm.

At this point, they weren’t just copying Nicole’s design. They were recreating it down to the last detail.

Forget the walls. Sven even insisted on hunting down the exact same brand of cement.

Nicole still had plenty of finishing work to do around her own place, and she had already paid everyone in grain, so she didn’t go over to help. 1

Since the perimeter wall was especially thick, Zeph decided to install two gates: an outer stainless steel gate that could be electrified and a heavy wooden gate behind it.

Like the gates of an old fortress, it would be sturdy enough to withstand even a battering ram.

They didn’t have a suitable wooden gate on hand, but Nicole quickly came up with a solution.

“Let’s put up the steel gate first. Later, we can have Tom custom-build the wooden one.”

The backyard was reserved for vegetables and rabbits. Instead of paving the front yard with concrete, they built

two raised planting beds where they could eventually propagate silvervine cuttings.

While Zeph leveled and compacted the ground, Nicole spread the river stones she had collected while gathering sand.

They mounted solar panels on the roof and wired electricity throughout the house.

Nicole brought out all the appliances: a refrigerator, a washing machine, air conditioners, heaters, an induction cooktop, a gas range…

No one knew what disaster would strike next. They might as well enjoy the comforts of life while they still could.

Over the years, Nicole had stockpiled plenty of household appliances. If it made life more comfortable, she brought it out. Most of them went upstairs, while the first-floor living room remained relatively simple.

Zeph also installed a door at the top of the staircase. Most of the time, it would stay open. If they had guests over especially children running around, they could simply close it.

The explanation was straightforward. The apocalypse was dangerous. If someone ever broke into the house, one more locked door might buy them precious time.

The second floor, on the other hand, was furnished much more comfortably.

Besides a couch and coffee table, it featured a massage chair that had cost well into five figures before the apocalypse.
