Chapter 49

Nicole’s group headed up the office building to look again, but everything had already been torn apart.
The offices were a mess. Most of the furniture was cheap composite, basically compressed sawdust glued together. It wouldn’t burn well, and it would probably give off toxic fumes.
The other building was the same. All they found were a few leftover instant meals, some cases of bottled water, and a small amount of usable wood.
They went back to the building where Jeremy’s company was. There were signs people had been there as well, put it wasn’t nearly as bad.
Whoever came through must’ve seen it was already picked over and rushed off to hit the other buildings instead
Nicole’s guess was right. The higher they went, the fewer signs of looting.
“We should sweep it again,” she said. “Everyone looks for different things. We might’ve missed something.”
This time, she took the areas Hughie had searched yesterday. Jeremy swapped with Zeph.
Yesterday, they were focused on medicine and food. Today was different.
With another 5,000 cubic feet of storage space, Nicole couldn’t shake the urge to fill it.
She grabbed books, decorative vases from executive offices, solid wood desks, wardrobes, bookshelves, crystal ornaments, and even mop handles from the janitor’s closet.
The guys weren’t as sharp when it came to this kind of scavenging, Nicole found a lot they had missed, such as snacks, unopened packages, and usable clothes and shoes.
She came across a jewelry company. The display cases were empty, but nothing looked broken.
That was odd.
She walked around and found the manager’s office locked tight.
Another reinforced door. She pried it open after some effort.
Inside were four safes, probably filled with gemstones.
Nicole didn’t hesitate and took all of them.
Then, she grabbed whatever she could find: cigarettes, alcohol, the sort. After that, she used the sword to chop up
the office furniture.
At a sportswear company, she picked out sizes that would fit the group and packed those to share. Everything else went into storage.
Another company had been planning some kind of team outing. Their admin office was stocked with boxes of charcoal and camping gear.
After clearing four floors, Nicole circled back to the clothing livestream company. She grabbed another batch of clothes, along with underwear and bras the guys had skipped.
She also went back to the appliance company and quietly picked out more useful electronics. One of them was a high-end massage chair worth thousands.

She avoided the others’ routes, slipping into places they had already cleared. If it had any use, she took it. By the time she was done, she had filled every inch of the extra storage space.
To make transport easier, they broke down all the solid wood furniture, cutting it into manageable pieces.
Two assault boats and three rafts were packed full.
They got back earlier this time. Everything was moved and divided before 10 p.m.
After what happened earlier, word had spread. Everyone in the building looked at them differently now. Their gazes were filled with fear and unease.
Nicole didn’t bother hiding it. She carried the wood upstairs openly.
Once inside, she shut the door and went straight into her storage space.
The safes sat quietly in the corner.
Neither the living room, balcony, nor bathroom changed.
Were they fake gemstones?
Nicole frowned, then pushed open the door to the main bedroom.
There was a new bathroom, about 100 square feet.
The safes were still locked, so she didn’t know how much gemstone was inside. But even so, the space had only expanded a little.
So the upgrade conditions weren’t simple.
That was fine. She would just keep looking.
Gold, silver, and gemstones weren’t worth much during the apocalypse anyway. She could always trade for them
later.
She was fast asleep when loud noises and screams from downstairs woke her in the middle of the night.
This was normal now, so Nicole turned over and went back to sleep.
She woke up naturally the next morning. Breakfast was simple. She had a couple of breakfast rolls and a bottle of milk, enough to fill her up.
The weather was still terrible. The vegetables she had planted were already starting to yellow. She diluted some nutrient solution and watered them, hoping for the best.
Checking her storage space with her mind, she saw the timer had only increased by two hours.
It was slow as hell.
With the extra garden space, she decided to plant more vegetables first. She would stock up for a couple of years before trying anything else.
Fruit trees took longer, so she could start those early. Mature saplings might even produce by next year.
Her physical training was paying off. She finished turning the soil and planting fifteen minutes faster than before.
Fifteen minutes could mean survival in a bad situation.
