Chapter 50

Hughie knew things weren’t the same anymore. He couldn’t keep relying on Beatrice and Nicole to protect him.

From now on, he had to step up and be the one doing the protecting.

“Yeah,” Nicole said, looking him over. “You definitely need the training.”

Then she remembered something. She went back inside and came out with a black bag. “I found this in the office building. Figured you and Beatrice might need it, so I kept it.”

Hughie glanced inside and froze for a second, then laughed awkwardly. “Thanks. I was actually looking for these.”

He almost forgot why he came. “Hey, you know what happened last night?”

“Nope. Slept right through it.”

“Edward and Mary got hit.”

Hughie had never liked the way Edward played games with multiple girls, especially how he strung Nicole along before. Good thing she walked away early.

“They came back all flashy with supplies yesterday. By night, someone robbed them.”

Edward was staying in unit 802. A two-bedroom wasn’t enough for that many people, so they crammed some into 1202 as well.

The attackers hit 1202 first. If Edward and the others hadn’t rushed over in time, Mary would’ve been in serious

trouble.

Edward’s group chased them off, but when they went back to the eighth floor, everything was gone.

Nicole raised a brow. “Diversion?”

Even robbing people took strategy now.

“Most of their stuff was on the eighth floor,” Hughie added, “but the assault boat and rafts were still there.”

Nicole let out a quiet laugh.

They had left those there on purpose.

They were planning to come back again and again, living off other people’s hard work.

“One of the guys got hurt,” Hughie went on. “He showed up earlier, begging for help. He said he wanted you to treat him.”

He shouted himself hoarse, but no one on the 18th floor even bothered to respond.

“Also, two guys from another building came by this morning. Wanted to, you know, pledge loyalty or whatever. Beatrice kicked them out.”

Nicole couldn’t help but laugh.

They were just trying to survive. How did they become known as some kind of gang?

Right then, Jeremy walked out, his face just as bruised as Hughie’s. “Are we heading out today?”

Nicole shook her head. “I’m staying in. If you guys want to go, go ahead. I’ll watch the place.”

Everything nearby had already been picked clean. There wasn’t much left worth going after.

And with Jeremy’s end-of-the-world talk getting into their heads, Hughie and Beatrice were starting to feel like they needed everything.

After a quick word, the three of them grabbed a raft and headed out, partly to look for supplies, partly to gather information.

Not long after noon, three more people showed up trying to join their “gang.”

Nicole was already fed up. She wrote a sign and stuck it on the door.

[No Alliances]

She didn’t trust any of them. Heck, she didn’t even have full confidence in Beatrice and the others.

In a world like this, people change fast. Friends, coworkers, it didn’t matter. When things got bad enough, people did things you couldn’t imagine.

If that day ever came, she wouldn’t hesitate to walk away.

She had everything she needed: food, clothes, and supplies.

What she needed now was to figure out how to expand her storage space again.

With the others gone, Nicole finally relaxed. She pulled out some snacks and ate while flipping through a book, letting time pass.

There was still time, so she took out the meat filling she had prepared earlier and started making ravioli.

She did that while watching a show. She made a whole pot worth of it before she even noticed.

Just then, she heard movement outside.

Beatrice and the others were back.

They had brought back some wood, along with two stainless steel doors they had pulled from a shopping center.

Seeing that Nicole and Zeph had reinforced doors, Hughie had been feeling uneasy. He had measured things out and searched until he found something that fit.

After a lot of hammering and noise, unit 1803 was finally reinforced.

They even installed the extra door in the stairwell. Now, anyone trying to reach the 18th floor would have to get through three layers of defense.

Watching Hughie mix cement, Nicole asked, “Where’d you get that?”

“Construction site nearby,” he said. “Climbed in and grabbed a couple of bags.”
