The Apocalypse Survival Manual (Three Days Before Doomsday, I Stockpiled Billions) novel Chapter 499

Chapter 499

It was like chewing on a mouthful of tough fibers, without even the fresh flavor of leafy greens.

Nicole’s group all knew what it was like to go hungry, so no one complained. Wasting food wasn’t an option.

That evening, they were sitting on the couch watching a movie when the radio crackled to life.

Sven’s astonished voice came through. “What happened with you guys today? I just got back, and several people. have already tried asking me about you.”

“Nothing major. We just got into a fight.”

“A fight?” Sven sounded stunned. “With whom?”

“A bunch of guards. They attacked us first.”

“No way.” Sven was astonished. Nicole was usually the one beating everyone else up.

Nicole didn’t hide anything and told him exactly what had happened.

The other end went quiet.

Then Sven said angrily, “You’re home, right? I’m coming over.”

The second floor was their private area, so Nicole could only entertain guests downstairs.

After what had happened that day, it wasn’t hard to imagine that they and the rest of the neighborhood would be

at odds from now on.

Syen was probably rushing over because he was worried about the same thing.

Nicole was already tired of the constant plotting and vigilance outside. She thought she could live quietly in a wealthy neighborhood, only to discover that rich people played even dirtier games.

Sven arrived soon afterward with Brandon, carrying snacks and beer. Judging by how much he brought, he clearly planned to drink until he passed out.

Nicole had no choice but to pull out a small electric grill. She sent Poppy to pick a few jalapeños, a zucchini, and some corn from the garden.

Brandon immediately followed her. “I’ll help you.”

Once they reached the backyard, Brandon pulled a lollipop from his pocket. “Why have you been ignoring me?”

Poppy smiled and gave him a tactful excuse. “I’ve been sick the past few days.”

“Is it because you don’t like them?” Brandon suddenly took her hand. “I won’t play with them anymore. From now on, it’ll just be the two of us.”

The truth was, he didn’t like them much either.

Whenever he ate something, they crowded around him with hungry eyes and kept staring at his food. They touched his clothes with dirty hands and sometimes even stole things from him.

Brandon knew life outside was hard and chaotic. It wasn’t that he hated them, but he always felt out of place around them. His father, however, seemed to enjoy the company and was always asking the men who worked for him to bring their children over.

At the housewarming party, those children had surrounded Poppy and stared at Cola like they wanted to eat him.

“But…” Poppy hesitated. “I’m very busy. I can’t play with you every day.”

“Then play with me whenever you’re free.”

Poppy thought for a moment. “Okay, but I can’t stay long.”

Brandon beamed and pressed the lollipop into her hand.

The grilled dry squid was soon ready, filling the house with a smoky, savory aroma. They tore it into strips and ate it with their drinks.

After three years of the apocalypse, Sven hadn’t expected high society to remain so closed off.

So what if they were rich? They still ate, slept, and shit like everyone else. What made them think they were so special?

“Most of the other residents aren’t that bad. Three years into the apocalypse, people have learned to keep their heads down and be civil. But now that they’re all living in the same neighborhood again, the gossip, status games, and petty competition are starting right back up.

“They have supplies, and a few of them know people in the local government, but none of those connections go very high. Most of the problems come from bored rich women who can’t mind their own business.
