Chapter 502
Eric considered Marcus’s theory. “You think they have connections in the government or at one of the bases and were warned ahead of time?”
“Two years of polar day, three years of polar night, and then the smog…”
Marcus’s usual lazy expression vanished.
“Do you know how much work it took us to get that classified information from the government base? But every part of their renovation was clearly designed for those exact disasters.
“I’ve spent the past few days making contacts. The day before yesterday, I met someone from the police department, and it took a lot of effort to get him talking.
“The classified information we received at the base originally came from Westbridge. Someone sent the police a letter predicting the disasters, and every prediction came true.
“But the details were too horrifying. The authorities ordered everyone involved to keep quiet because they were afraid the truth would cause mass panic.
“The government stockpiled construction materials in advance because the letter predicted a massive earthquake. When the earthquake struck, it unfolded exactly as the letter had described.”
Eric narrowed his eyes and studied his son. Marcus seemed different somehow.
But then, Marcus immediately slipped back into his usual careless manner.
“Stop looking at me like that. It’s been three years since the apocalypse began. Anyone would change. Even an idiot would’ve learned something by now.”
That was true. Before the disasters, Marcus had spent every night partying and chasing women. The Robinson name had let him throw his weight around wherever he went without ever facing consequences,
Then the disasters came, and money and jewelry became worthless.
Power was all that mattered.
Government officials once greeted him with smiles and treated him with respect. Now, the bases were filled with the children of powerful military officers and politicians.
The days when the Robinsons could make everyone fall in line with a single word were over. Instead, they were constantly kept in check, used as pawns, and forced to swallow one humiliation after another.
That was why they had taken the first chance they got to return to Westbridge. Unless he had no other choice, Marcus never wanted to go back.
He once thought he was ruthless. Street racing in the middle of the night, picking up women at clubs, and ramming someone’s car when they crossed him had all seemed perfectly normal.
It was only after entering the base that he learned what real ruthlessness looked like. Cross the wrong person, and the conflict wouldn’t end until one side was dead. Money and family connections could no longer make every problem disappear.
Whenever Marcus remembered the look in Zeph and Nicole’s eyes, he was reminded that some people simply couldn’t be crossed.
Even with a gun pointed at her head, Nicole remained perfectly calm, openly mocking the men threatening her.

Marcus had never seen anyone behave like that before, not even since the apocalypse began.
The Robinsons might still look powerful, but that power existed only because the authorities allowed it. If they ever lost that support, the mobs outside would tear them apart.
It happened all the time at the base. Privileged heirs would swagger around behind guarded walls, then get hacked to pieces the moment they stepped outside.
Anyone who witnessed enough of that eventually learned fear, assuming they wanted to stay alive.
Eric asked grimly, “Are you saying the Robinsons should apologize on behalf of the HOA?”
Marcus rubbed his chin. “No. We can’t afford that kind of humiliation. The smartest move is to let things settle down, investigate their background, and decide what to do once we know who we’re dealing with.”
Thinking back to Zeph’s movements and disciplined posture, Marcus had already formed a theory. He was / probably former military or law enforcement, and not some low-ranking nobody.
