Chapter 52

Faye froze for a second after hearing that.

Nicole had only studied medicine for a year, and most of that was just theory. Yet Mary had sounded so sure, and they had all just gone along with it.

Thinking about it now, Faye realized they really had been putting Nicole in a tough spot.

“Then… Can you lend us your boat?” Faye asked. “We’ll take him to the hospital ourselves.”

“If you want to play the hero, go ahead,” Nicole said, stepping closer. Her tone turned sharp. “You got dragged into a mess, and now you want to drag me down with you?”

Faye’s face went pale. She looked as if she had just been struck, her gaze torn and complicated.

Nicole didn’t wait. She turned and kept heading downstairs.

By the time she reached the sixth floor, Faye came running after her. “Wait!”

Nicole didn’t stop.

Faye’s voice rose, angry and uneven. “You knew they had bad intentions! Why didn’t you warn me?”

Nicole finally glanced back. “Who are you to me? Why would I warn you?”

She didn’t wait for an answer.

“If you’re so kind, why did you only offer food to Edward when everyone else in the group chat was starving? He brought a whole group to your place, and you didn’t say no. Why not?

“Meal after meal. You really didn’t notice? Or were you just trying to win him over?

“And now that you do see it, why are you still sticking with them?”

Looking at Faye, Nicole couldn’t help but think of herself in her past life and how stupid she had been.

Why didn’t she say anything to Faye back then? Because it wouldn’t have mattered.

No one was clueless. Everyone had their own agenda.

Back then, Nicole had noticed, too. Even then, she still wanted Edward’s approval and cared about appearances.

She cooked for him and gave him everything. When Edward said a few sweet words, she would float like she was on air, ready to hand him her whole heart.

If someone had come up to her back then and warned her, told her he had bad intentions, that the world was ending, and she needed to save her food…

She would’ve been the first to call the guy crazy.

That was how it always went when someone was stupidly in love.

So why would Nicole bother now?

And even now, Faye still chose to stay with them after seeing what kind of people they were. That said enough.

“That’s not true!” Faye said, her voice breaking. “If you had told me earlier, I wouldn’t have given them my food.”

She couldn’t face her own choices. Tears welled up as her voice shook.

“Why are you so cold? Why didn’t you tell me Edward was a piece of trash?”

She broke down crying.

Nicole gave her a calm look. “You might want to keep your voice down. He could be upstairs listening”

Faye flinched and covered her mouth immediately.

Nicole just watched her for a second.

See? She still chose the same path.

You couldn’t wake someone pretending to sleep.

Anyway, it wasn’t Nicole’s job to try.

Nicole got onto the motorboat and headed out into the pouring rain, making her way toward the convention center.

With the risks ahead, she put on a life vest. The diving gear was ready in her storage space if she needed it.

Still, she wasn’t afraid.
