The Apocalypse Survival Manual (Three Days Before Doomsday, I Stockpiled Billions) novel Chapter 536

Chapter 536

Jason remained expressionless in the face of Marcus’s stupidity.

“Dozens of cases of liquor, an antique collection, over a million dollars’ worth of golf clubs, scuba gear, watches, cash, handguns and ammunition, a million-dollar custom-made sword, and a stockpile of premium food.”

“Handguns and ammunition?” Marcus stared at him in disbelief. “You were practically begging to get arrested.”

Jason glanced at him. “So were you.”

Between the illegal street races, underground fight clubs, and tax evasion, Marcus would’ve been facing a lot more than a short prison sentence if the apocalypse hadn’t happened.

“Everything you lost still wasn’t worth as much as one of my cars.”

Marcus had hoped Jason’s misfortune would make him feel better, but now he only felt worse.

“Damn. Why’d you keep all that stuff at your office?”

“At the time, I was keeping Valerie locked up at the villa. She fought me constantly, destroyed anything she could get her hands on, and stabbed me several times. She went crazy whenever she saw me.”

That was why he spent so much time living at the office, only returning to the villa when he missed her too much.

“You held her captive?” Marcus’s jaw nearly hit the floor. “With your looks and status, you could have any woman you wanted! Women would line up around the block if you so much as snapped your fingers. Why would you ever need to do something like that?”

“You wouldn’t understand what made her special.”

A trace of sorrow flickered in Jason’s dark eyes.

“I broke her legs and chained her up because I wanted her heart. There are countless women in the world, but she’s the only one I’ve ever wanted.”

Holy crap. Jason wasn’t just a criminal. He had practically committed every crime in the book.

Marcus felt as though his entire worldview had been shattered.

“What happened after that?”

“She wouldn’t cooperate, so I starved her for two weeks as punishment. All she had to do was apologize, but she would rather drink from the toilet and chew on tissues to keep herself alive than give in to me. Then, the typhoon hit. She stabbed me and jumped from the second floor…”

“Sh-she died?”

“No.”

Jason’s expression darkened as the painful memories resurfaced.

“She had already gone two weeks without food. She was nothing but skin and bones, and one of her legs was crippled. Then the typhoon swept her away…”

He searched for her like a madman but never found so much as a trace of her body.

Nicole, whose hearing was exceptionally sharp, sat silently behind them, feeling speechless.

Seriously? Between the two of them, these rich jerks had practically committed every crime in the book. Did they think the people sitting behind them couldn’t hear?

They were talking about all of it like they didn’t care who might overhear.

Then again, this was the apocalypse. No matter how many laws or moral boundaries they had crossed before the disasters, there was no one left to hold them accountable now.

Still, why did Jason’s list of stolen belongings sound so familiar?

Nicole carefully went over it again in her head, and her eyes suddenly widened.

Holy crap. Everything Jason had lost was sitting in her storage space. A few bottles of liquor were gone, but she still had plenty of the steaks, ham, and other food. If they ever found out, there probably wouldn’t even be enough/ of her left to bury.

Then again, this was the apocalypse. Who hadn’t done something illegal?

Nicole’s earlier unease vanished, replaced by a sudden burst of courage. Returning the stolen goods was out of the question. If they had a problem with that, they could fight her for them.

That was what she told herself, but she still needed to keep a low profile and avoid attracting their attention.

So she pretended to listen closely to the meeting.

Anyone who could afford to live in Brighton Estates had plenty of food, so no one objected to basing the HOA fees on the size of each villa.

Nicole nearly raised both hands in agreement.
