Chapter 548
Several months passed in the blink of an eye, and before they knew it, Christmas had arrived.
Zeph had nice handwriting, so Nicole asked him to make a few handwritten Christmas decorations, which she happily hung on the front door.
When Sven saw them, he immediately asked Zeph to make two for him as well.
The mastiff still came by every day, rain or shine. He had become Cola’s devoted follower, and the two dogs oftery sparred outside the gate.
By now, he no longer considered himself an outsider and even started trying to get closer to Zeph.
If they hadn’t searched him before letting him into the yard, Nicole might have suspected he was a spy sent by
Marcus.
In the end, they gave him one of the Christmas decorations, and he happily carried it away in his mouth.
Beatrice’s reproductive health issues were fully treated. Depression, however, wasn’t something that simply disappeared for good, so she still had to keep a close eye on her emotional health.
She contacted Nicole over the radio and invited her and Zeph over for Christmas dinner.
Their apartment was so cramped there was barely enough room to move around.
After spending more than six months with them, Nicole could tell they were gradually returning to their old selves.
“Your building is too crowded. You can’t even cook oatmeal without worrying that someone will smell it. Why don’t you all come here instead?”
Beatrice and the others happily agreed and said they would come over early for Christmas dinner.
The mastiff carried the sign away, then returned with a bottle of red wine in his mouth.
Who else but Marcus would do something like that?
As long as he stopped causing trouble for Villa 50, Nicole couldn’t be bothered with him. Giving him attention would only encourage him.
Two days before Christmas, the security team notified Nicole that someone was outside asking for her.
Nicole guessed it was Lydia.
The Goodmans were determined to repay her for the medicine with food. This was already the third time they had brought something over.
Gabrielle really was persistent. After giving it some thought, Nicole caught a pair of rabbits for her, along with two chicks that had hatched two weeks earlier and several hardy medicinal seedlings.
Of the first batch of chickens they had raised, only six survived. Two were roosters. Nicole kept one for breeding and slaughtered the other.
Poppy secretly wiped away her tears when the chicken she raised was killed.
But that evening, she took one bite of the drumstick and broke into a dimpled smile. “Nicole, this chicken is delicious!”

After surviving the extreme weather, it tasted far better than any of the chickens they
stackpiled from the market.
The chicks hatched from their hens’ eggs also seemed much stronger.
Aside from the eggs they continued incubating, Nicole stored the remaining fertilized eggs in her storage space. She did the same with the duck and goose eggs, raising new animals while steadily building up their reserves. Lydia brought ten pounds of food. She was delighted to leave with the rabbits and chicks, though she couldn’t shake the feeling that the Goodmans somehow owed Nicole more every time they tried to repay her.
Victor came with her as well.
Three years had stripped away the innocence he once had. He looked much more mature now, though he was far too thin.
Then again, everyone was thin these days. The Goodmans had steady work and a secure place to live, so they were still better off than most.
“How is Gabrielle doing?”
“She’s doing alright. She can’t stand sitting around, so she’s filled the entire balcony with vegetables.
