Chapter 547
Hughie opened the trunk. Inside were a case of medicine, a case of cured meat, bags of rice and flour, salt, sugar, half a case of cigarettes, and half a case of liquor.
The medicine included injections and pills. Judging by the expiration dates, all of it was past its prime, though some of the pills were probably still usable. They just wouldn’t be as effective.
The cured meat was old, too. Whether anyone was willing to risk eating it was up to them.
The salt and sugar were valuable, especially the sugar, which was stored properly and wasn’t spoiled.
Nicole took out her thermos, mixed some sugar into the water, and gave it to Diana and Beatrice to help them recover their strength.
They couldn’t stay in the wilderness for long. Hughie drove back toward their apartment while Nicole sorted through the medicine in the car, setting aside anything that was still usable and putting the rest in a separate pile.
As for what they planned to do with the car, everyone had their own way of surviving. Nicole knew better than to ask.
Beatrice took out several bottles of medicine and two bags of sugar and handed them to Nicole.
“We wouldn’t have made it through tonight without you.”
It was meant to compensate her for the anesthetic and other medical supplies she used.
Those supplies were nearly impossible to replace, especially the anesthetic, but this was all they could offer. Nicole wouldn’t have touched the old cured meat or stale rice, anyway.
Nicole was used to the way they handled things, so she didn’t refuse. She accepted the supplies and slipped them into her bag.
When they reached the apartment building, she explained how to care for Diana’s wound and told them to contact her immediately if anything seemed wrong.
Nicole rode home, while Hughie left to deal with the car and the expired supplies.
By the time she returned to Brighton Estates, it was already past midnight. The curtains on the second floor were only half drawn. Zeph was still awake, waiting for her.
The moment Cola heard her return, he rushed outside to greet her.
She had promised to be home before 10 p.m., so Zeph asked with concern, “You were talking that whole time?”
Nicole told him what happened that night.
Zeph didn’t comment. He went upstairs and ran her a bath.
“It’s getting cold again. Soak your feet after you shower. It’ll help warm you up.”
By the time she finished, it was nearly 2 a.m. Nicole climbed into bed and found that Zeph had already warmed the covers for her.
She kissed him, turned off the light, and went to sleep.
Diana was incredibly tough and somehow pulled through. Even Nicole admired her will to survive.

A little over ten days later, Nicole went over to remove her stitches. She also remembered to bring Jeremy and Hughie the one thing they wanted most.
She didn’t keep anything from Zeph and told him the whole story.
Nicole stored the supplies, so he had no objection as long as she kept enough for the two of them. She didn’t know much about birth control, so she set aside anything Zeph might be able to use and brought some of the rest with her.
Diana owed her life to Nicole, and even her usually stern expression softened.
“Nicole, thank you.”
“We’re friends. You don’t have to thank me.”
Cleaning the wound and removing the stitches didn’t take long.
Jeremy and Hughie were both at work, and Beatrice wasn’t home either, so Nicole had no choice but to give the two bags to Diana.
Diana remained surprisingly calm when she saw what was inside. “These are hard to find. What do you want for them?”
She tried to get some before, but the price was outrageous.
There was no easy way to explain where they came from, so Nicole told her the truth.
“A criminal gang came after us before and nearly blew us to pieces. I was furious, so we raided their base. I got these for free, and there’s no way we could ever use them all. Let me know whenever you need more.”
The extreme weather made them difficult to store, so Nicole only brought enough to last about six months.
“The police don’t know about any of this, so please keep it to yourself.”
“Don’t worry. I know how to keep my mouth shut.”
Diana had dealt with plenty of criminal groups when she led her own team, so she knew better than to ask questions or spread rumors.
