Chapter 554
Victor’s girlfriend also worked at the research institute, though she had an administrative job. She looked quiet and delicate, but Gabrielle felt that she was much better with people than the three reserved Goodmans.
She didn’t earn much, and she had lost her entire family during the apocalypse, leaving her completely on her
own.
One evening after work, she ran into a group of thugs. Victor happened to be passing by and took them down with a stun baton.
She had no family complications, seemed honest and dependable, and would fit in well with the Goodmans.
Seeing Victor get married would leave Gabrielle with no regrets.
Gabrielle warmly invited them. “The wedding reception is in a couple of weeks. You and Zeph should come have dinner with us.”
Nicole readily agreed. “We’ll be there.”
After spending some more time at the plaza, they headed home as the weather began to turn colder.
When they returned to the neighborhood, several cars were parked outside the Robinsons’ villa. Bodyguards hurried in and out, as though something serious had happened.
Whatever was going on, Nicole decided it had nothing to do with her and looked away.
When they reached their villa, they found a body lying outside the gate.
A dog’s body.
The mastiff lay sprawled on the ground, covered in blood and struggling to breathe.
Cola jumped out of the car and rushed around him, sniffing anxiously and letting out soft, distressed whines.
Nicole got out and examined the mastiff. Several wounds covered his body. Some looked like blunt-force injuries, while others were deep cuts, and his fur was soaked with blood.
He had clearly been in a brutal fight.
But another dog hadn’t done this. A person had.
He had collapsed outside her gate either because he was desperate to survive or because he wanted to see Cola one last time.
Judging by how far he had dragged himself, he clearly wasn’t ready to die.
Dogs were intelligent animals, and he had already made it all the way to her house. Nicole couldn’t simply stand there and watch him die.
She bent down, then carried him into the yard with Zeph.
Nicole brought out some gauze, shaved the fur around his wounds, and disinfected them.
Anesthetic was too valuable to waste, and treating this many wounds would have taken several doses.
Nicole wasn’t willing to use that much, so she secured the mastiff’s muzzle and legs before stitching the wounds closed.

The mastiff seemed to understand that she was trying to help. Despite the pain, he barely struggled and only whimpered as Nicole worked.
Once the wounds were bandaged, she gave him several expired pills. Whether he survived was out of her hands.
Cola dragged over half a bowl of bones he had been saving and nudged them toward the mastiff, clearly telling
him to eat.
Nicole didn’t know whether to laugh or sigh. For Cola’s sake, she prepared another half bowl of high-calorie food for the injured dog.
After eating, the mastiff didn’t stay. He limped back toward the Robinsons’ villa.
Nicole watched him leave, locked both gates, and went inside.
It was too cold to bother cooking, so she decided to take it easy and reheat something from her storage space.
She had barely set dinner on the table when someone started pounding on the door.
“Ms. Floyd!”
It was Peter, the Robinsons’ butler. “Do you know medicine?”
“No.”
“But didn’t you just stitch up the dog?”
“So?”
