Chapter 558
No one knew how long polar night would last, so Sven decided to follow Brandon’s example and start growing vegetables and raising chickens and ducks.
The more self-sufficient he could become, the better.
“You can raise them if you have the room, but I’ll pass.”
Nicole already had plenty of fish and dozens of sheep.
“The temperature swings are already this extreme during polar day. They could be even worse during polar night, so I’m not going to put in all that work for nothing.”
Sven still planned to get some. Since he wouldn’t be going anywhere during polar night, he might as well give himself something to do.
He asked Nicole for a good supply of vegetable seeds and planned to use both the backyard and the rooftop.
If he couldn’t get them to grow, he could ask Weasel and the others for help. Anything extra could be shared among them.
After he left, Nicole contacted Hughie over the radio.
“I heard polar night will most likely arrive within the next few months. Start stocking up on food and reinforce your doors and windows. If it really happens, crime will probably get much worse. You should seriously think about whether it’s worth continuing to work.”
Hughie’s tone immediately turned serious.
“We’ll decide about work when the time comes. We just put a deposit on a house, and it should be ready in a little over a month. By then, we’ll probably have nothing left except a few bottles of liquor and several pounds of brown sugar. Can you keep an eye out for anyone willing to trade food?”
“Sure. I’ll look around. We have extra vegetables here, so I’ll dry some for you when the time comes.”
“Thanks, Nicole.”
“Don’t mention it. Just be careful.”
The government hadn’t made an official announcement yet, but people with connections already heard the news, and tension was spreading fast.
Before long, Weasel and the others arrived with their wives.
The women planted cold-resistant potatoes and vegetables in Sven’s backyard and on the roof, then used the remaining space in the front yard.
The men installed electric fencing along the top of Sven’s walls and added the same setup at Villa 50.
Nicole had no idea when polar night would begin, but there was no harm in preparing early. To thank them, she gave them ten pounds of cracked corn and asked them to install the diesel generator as well.
She knew how to take one apart, but putting it back together was another story.
Sven had people with the right skills, so there was no reason not to make use of them.
Her storage space already had electricity, so she didn’t actually need the generator. Still, she needed a believable

explanation for where Villa 50’s power came from.
Once polar night arrived, she could run it occasionally to keep up appearances.
The other residents noticed what Villas 49 and 50 were doing, and they quickly grew uneasy.
Those without generators began approaching Sven and asking him to find one for them. Demand surged overnight, driving prices through the roof.
Sven couldn’t locate enough units on such short notice, so he came to ask Nicole if she had any more.
Nicole had found two used generators at the furniture expo center, and Ironvale Base had four more, including two brand-new ones. But generators eventually wore out, and without replacement parts, a broken unit was worthless. 1
With proper maintenance, they might last for decades. Only an idiot would sell one.
“No. It took me a lot of effort just to trade for this used one.”
Sven had no choice but to search for the generators himself. He actually managed to track down several and sold them at outrageous prices, accepting only food in return.
