Chapter 557
That thought made Nicole curious.
“Do you know how to fly a helicopter?” she asked Zeph.
“Yes.”
Seriously, what kind of superhuman officer was he? Was there anything he couldn’t do?
“The department regularly selected its top officers för specialized training,” Zeph explained matter-of-factly
Nicole tossed a snack at him. “Of course they did, Mr. Perfect.”
With neither of the little ones around, Zeph spoke without the slightest embarrassment. “I’m quite a catch, and I still fell for you. That must make you pretty special.”
Nicole stared at him. “When did you get so full of yourself?”
After successfully making himself at home at Villa 50, the mastiff began showing up every day. Before long, he even started dragging Marcus along in his wheelchair.
Nicole frowned at him. “You’re still in this condition, and you keep parading around the neighborhood. Aren’t you embarrassed?”
“You’re the only person in this neighborhood who doesn’t show me any respect,” Marcus said.
Nicole couldn’t be bothered arguing with him. His wounds had healed well, so she removed the stitches and told
him to leave.
Marcus studied the wall surrounding Villa 50. “I heard polar night is coming. Do you think my family should build one of these?”
“What does that have to do with me?”
“Don’t be so cold. You already saved my life once. You might have to do it again someday.”
Nicole shot back, “And what do I get out of saving you again?”
Marcus looked offended. “Do you have to make everything so transactional?”
“What else would I base it on? It’s not like we’re friends.”
Since Marcus refused to take the hint and leave, Nicole gave him one piece of advice.
“If you don’t build a wall, you might not be able to keep outsiders out. But if you do, are you sure you can control everyone inside it?”
Marcus was grinning at first, but as her meaning sank in, the smile froze on his face.
She was warning him that polar night would bring chaos. The Robinsons employed a large staff of servants and bodyguards. If any of them turned against the family…
He didn’t dare follow that thought any further. The possibility alone sent a chill down his spine.
His expression stiffened, and he quickly left.

That evening, Sven stopped by with more than ten pounds of beef and half a lamb.
Selling to wealthy women was easy money. They nearly fought over the skin care products, and the two cartons of cigarettes had sold even faster.
Fresh meat, however, was much harder to find. He had gone to considerable trouble to trade for it.
He had also brought news. “I heard polar night might be coming. We need to get ready.”
Nicole pretended to be surprised. “Who told you that?”
“I saw the city installing streetlights on my way back. Why else would they be doing that unless polar night was coming?”
No wonder Sven was so successful as a trader. Nicole had to admire how observant he was.
“I’ve heard the same thing,” she said. “There’s a good chance it’ll happen within the next few months.”
Nearly two years of polar day gave the survivors a chance to recover, even though the climate was still brutal.
The city had gathered technical experts to build waste-to-energy plants and large biogas facilities, and some organizations were already using them.
Unfortunately, disaster after disaster destroyed too much equipment and wiped out too many essential resources for the systems to be widely adopted.
Still, even a limited amount of street lighting could help discourage crime during polar night.
