Chapter 56

With this thing in hand, Nicole would finally be able to sleep a little easier.

Another thanks to that CEO for his contribution.

There was one safe left, the one she had taken from the office. This one probably wasn’t anything illegal, right?

She pried it open.

Inside was a box stuffed full of paper.

More accurately, cash. Each stack held ten thousand. There were 20 stacks, which meant two hundred thousand in total. All crisp, brand-new bills.

Nicole hadn’t expected that.

If she had gotten her hands on this before everything fell apart… Yeah, she would probably be locked up by now.

The cash hadn’t been officially voided, but it had already lost most of its value. Still, it was better than nothing.

She stuffed the money into her backpack and dumped the empty safes into the floodwater.

She had more or less made it through all 18 floors in one go. Going out solo wasn’t easy.

She pulled out her phone and checked the offline map, looking for anywhere nearby worth checking out.

There was a commercial tech museum in the neighboring city, Grayport.

Grayport was the state capital, but the museum sat out in the suburbs, only about 12 miles from Fairfield.

Nicloe didn’t have anything specific she desperately needed right now, aside from expanding the storage space.

There was no point even thinking about ships, planes, things like that. Best to keep moving and see what she could find. Maybe she would get lucky.

She set the route and headed for the Grayport Tech Museum.

Everything was flooded. Without knowing the area, it took her nearly an hour to get there.

Only the top two floors of the museum were still above water.

Grayport had a huge population. The place had already been picked clean, who knew how many times. It was a mess inside. Anything useful for survival had long been taken.

Nicole made a quick round and was about to leave when her flashlight swept across an orange ball. It was perfectly round and bright-colored, about ten feet across.

Wait… An escape pod?

Nicole had seen something like it before in a video. It was a survival capsule designed for earthquakes and tsunamis.

She picked up a brochure from the floor.

Yep. She had guessed right.

It was built with three layers of aerospace-grade metal. It was tough enough to withstand sharp impacts, high heat, and extreme pressure without deforming. The interior was just as solid, with high-strength welding, safety

harnesses, and shock-absorbing seats.

Everything about it was designed to make you feel secure. This was the upgraded model. It had GPS, oxygen supply, lighting, plus stored drinking water and food.

How much it could hold depended on the internal storage. A single-person pod could last five days. A larger one, built for five to ten people, could last about two weeks.

The single version was only about two and a half feet wide.

This one in front of her was nearly ten feet tall. It was definitely the largest model.

Nicole opened the hatch and found six shock-absorbing seats.

Inside, there was enough room to stretch out. It had a compact waste system, water storage at the base so it could float, and sealed compartments lining the walls, probably for supplies. There was even a first aid kit.

When an earthquake or tsunami hit, people could climb inside and ride it out, sealed off from the outside.

Once things settled, they could trigger the emergency signal and wait for rescue.

Judging by the display layout, there should’ve been smaller pods, too. But those were already gone.

This one was massive. No way anyone had been able to move it.

Nicole tried pushing it, but it didn’t budge at all.
