“That’s it?” Marcus sounded offended by Nicole’s lack of enthusiasm. “I called you over and over, but you never answered. I thought they’d dragged you away.”

“Relax,” Nicole said. “They’d get you long before they ever got me.”

“I’m telling you, I took down six of those thugs! One shot each. Scared the rest so badly they jumped into their cars and took off…”

He kept going, bragging without pause.

“The neighborhood’s safe now. You can come outside without worrying.”

Nicole’s ears were beginning to hurt, so she switched to another channel.

Marcus hadn’t actually done anything that remarkable. Excluding the guards who had resigned or refused to join them, the rogue security team had only numbered a little over 20.

They had already looted several homes and gathered plenty of supplies, so they had every reason to leave quickly. If they pushed the residents too far and forced them to fight back together, the guards wouldn’t stand a chance.

Plenty of homeowners had guns.

The guards stole a great deal, but they also lost several men. Including those shot by the Robinsons, they probably lost at least a third of their group. Leaving now was the obvious choice. More rioters could storm the neighborhood at any moment.

“We can’t let our guard down.” Zeph’s expression turned serious. “They know this neighborhood too well. Even if the rioters never make it inside, those guards could recruit more people and come back.”

Brighton Estates was too tempting a target to ignore. Everyone would want a share of what was inside.

Nicole agreed.

After breakfast, she and Zeph began sparring to stay sharp.

Poppy and Cola kept busy, too. Poppy practiced punching the couch while Cola worked with a training strap in the hallway.

Around noon, Jeremy contacted them again. “Nicole, are you alright?”

“We’re fine. What about you?”

“We’re alright. Just a few minor injuries.”

It was relatively quiet on Jeremy’s end, so he had probably made it somewhere safe.

Remembering Zeph’s role in his previous life, Nicole asked, “How’s the police station holding up?”

“Quite a few people were injured, but overall, we’re managing.”

The police and military had begun preparing for polar night long before it arrived.

Two years earlier, the military base at Halloway started developing specialized equipment and distributing large quantities of ammunition, bulletproof vests, cut and stab-resistant clothing, and advanced night-vision goggles to cities across the country.

Jeremy’s group was issued protective gear. The civilian patrol officers weren’t allowed to carry handguns, but they had powerful stun batons and clothing designed to protect them from knives and other sharp weapons.

The night-vision goggles worked remarkably well. They didn’t turn night into day, but they made people clearly visible and left the rioters with nowhere to hide.

Even so, there were simply too many of them. When they surged forward in a solid mass, they were nearly impossible to stop.

Nicole felt a surge of excitement when she heard that. None of this equipment had existed in their previous life.

With support from the military base, police officers and soldiers across the country wouldn’t have to repeat the same tragedy. They wouldn’t run out of ammunition, be forced into hand-to-hand combat, and die where they stood.

“You and Zeph don’t need to worry,” Jeremy said. “The station has plenty of equipment, including pepper spray and high-intensity lights that can temporarily blind people. I also heard military reinforcements are almost here” After ending the call, Nicole shared the news with Zeph and rested her head against his shoulder.

“You don’t have to blame yourself or feel guilty. A lot of things are different this time.”
