Chapter 572

Nicole didn’t mention Irene’s visit to Zeph because she genuinely didn’t think it was worth bringing up.
The truth wasn’t hard to guess. If anything, realizing what kind of person Irene was lifted a weight from Nicole’s shoulders.
If Irene wanted to be selfish, Nicole could be selfish, too.
What Nicole feared was that Irene might have had some unavoidable reason for abandoning her and would use it, to guilt her into accepting her.
Family ties were fragile enough in the apocalypse, especially with someone as coldly self-serving as Irene.
“Do you think I’m selfish?” Nicole suddenly asked.
The question caught Zeph off guard. “Why would you ask that?”
Nicole smiled. “It just crossed my mind.”
Zeph knew she wouldn’t ask something like that without a reason. After thinking for a moment, he said, “You told me yourself that we’re only human. We can only do what’s within our power.”
She had a storage space, but what it held was still only a drop in the ocean compared with what the world needed. Besides, she had already warned the government about the coming disasters through anonymous letters. There was no telling how many lives that had saved.
She had also given Jasper large quantities of supplies twice, not to mention everything she had done for the people of Oakhaven Gardens.
She had already done enough. As long as she stayed alive and didn’t become a burden on the authorities, that was enough. The rest was beyond her control.
“Thank you,” Nicole said quietly.
If she had never met him, she might have become far more selfish.
Zeph rubbed her head. “Stop overthinking.”
The days passed, and the neighborhood remained peaceful for the time being.
It wasn’t that no rioters had set their sights on the place. Marcus had simply pestered Zeph into making more Molotov cocktails.
“People with talent should put it to good use. The whole team voted for you to be captain.”
Marcus had even pulled strings to switch patrol teams because he was determined to stay close to Zeph.
Those Molotov cocktails were just too damn impressive.
Zeph wasn’t swayed by flattery, but Marcus supplied the gasoline and kept praising Nicole to him, so he eventually made several.
Sven also contributed several backpack pesticide sprayers and filled them with gasoline. If trouble broke out, they could soak the area and set it ablaze immediately.
Cola and Dumbo served as their primary scouts. Nothing happening nearby escaped their sharp eyes or ears.

The Robinsons’ connections were undeniable. Somehow, they had gotten their hands on a shipment of the military base’s latest equipment.
There were only ten sets.
Marcus turned around and stole two of them for Zeph and Nicole.
When Eric found out, he nearly beat Marcus senseless with a wooden club. “Whose side are you on?”
“Dad, don’t you understand that if one house falls, the rest are left exposed?” Marcus rubbed the swollen lump on his head and muttered resentfully, “Villa 50 could defend this entire neighborhood by themselves, Who else should we be backing? You’re getting senile.”
“What did you say? Say that again, you brat!”
Jason adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses. “Uncle Eric, Marcus is right. We need to stay on Villa 50’s good side.”
Eric wanted both of those idiots out of his sight.
There was no chance Nicole would return anything once it fell into her hands.
The military base’s latest equipment was genuinely impressive.
The bulletproof vests offered better protection, and the night-vision goggles were much clearer than the ones she had stockpiled. If something was too far away to see clearly in the dark, they automatically switched to thermal imaging.
The stun batons were excellent, too.
