Chapter 574
Wave after wave of rioters came after Hughie’s group. If the four of them hadn’t been strong and ruthless enough to fight back, all their supplies would have been stolen.
The real problem was that the attacks never stopped. One group came today, another two days later, leaving everyone constantly on edge and never knowing when the next attack would come.
Nicole frowned. The homes they had bought were in Phase Three, far from the center of the new district and almost on the border with Grayport. Most of Westbridge’s police and military forces were concentrated downtown, while some personnel had also been assigned to protect critical facilities and factories.
They were severely understaffed, and the outskirts suffered the worst.
After thinking it over, Nicole said, “I bought two apartments across from the police station in case the villa ever fell and we needed somewhere else to shelter. This area is still relatively safe for now, so you can use one of them. We’ll deal with everything else once we make it through this.”
Across from the police station? That was about as safe as it got.
They had considered the area while house hunting and searched the entire neighborhood several times, but they hadn’t found a single unit for sale.
“Nicole, thank you.”
Hughie and the others didn’t know how to express their gratitude.
She had saved them yet again when they needed it most.
Otherwise, trying to work while defending their homes from rioters would have ended with them either collapsing from exhaustion or being killed.
Nicole had the keys, but going out during the polar night was far too dangerous. She trusted Hughie’s lock- picking skills.
“Just go straight there. Everyone in the building knows us. Give them my name and Zeph’s, and they’ll let you in.”
Sven had given Weasel a radio, and the two groups stayed in regular contact.
From what Nicole had heard, Weasel and the others got along well with the former residents of Oakhaven Gardens. Under Isaac’s leadership, the building remained fairly secure.
Hughie and the others quickly gathered their supplies and weapons, then headed for the building across from the police station.
Two hours later, Weasel’s voice came through the radio. “Four people showed up using your name and asking to move in. Is that right?”
“Yeah.” Nicole gave him their names, heights, and descriptions. “They’re friends I’d trust with my life. Thanks for helping them.”
Once everything checked out, Weasel and the others let them inside.
“Don’t worry. Your friends are our friends.”
When Zeph returned from patrol, Nicole told him what she had done.
He had no objections. They had bought those two apartments as a backup in case of an emergency. Ideally, they

would never need them. If one of them could help Hughie and the others now, all the better.
While they were eating, Zeph told her something.
“Irene and Camila seem to have left Villa 36. Only the two boys were still there.
“They were injured during the riot, but they didn’t have any medicine, so their condition kept getting worse When the other patrol shift realized no one from the Clark household had reported for duty, they went to check and found both boys dead.”
Nicole said nothing and continued eating.
Even after losing everything, a wealthy family like the Clarks still had resources. If Irene wanted to save them, she probably could have found a way to get medicine.
The apocalypse was brutal, and people died every day. Nicole had little sympathy left to spare, and what remained was reserved for only a handful of people.
One month into the polar night, the agricultural research institute announced good news.
The institute in Pinecrest had successfully developed plants that could grow with very little light. Westbridge already sent people to collect them, and distribution would begin in three days.
The government warned survivors not to travel alone during the polar night. Supplies would be collected by neighborhood groups, with everyone required to travel together and remain alert.
After discussing it, the residents decided to collect their share.
That surprised Nicole, though it wasn’t difficult to understand.
