Chapter 589
Nicole laid out her terms.
“That much grain would be hard to store, and it would paint a huge target on our backs. I’ll talk to the Robinsons and see if I can negotiate for something else instead.”
Diana had no problem with that. Rescuing Marcus was never part of their original plan anyway. If they couldn’t save him, she wasn’t losing anything.
Nicole could handle the reward negotiations with the Robinsons, while anything they took from the raiders would still be split evenly among everyone involved.
With Nicole and Zeph joining them, their odds of success had improved considerably.
Jeremy and Hughie came over and pulled Nicole aside.
“Nicole, we didn’t think this through. We never should’ve dragged you into this. You and Zeph already have everything you need. There’s no reason for you to risk your lives for us.”
She had already done more than enough for them, both before and now.
Seeing how guilty they looked, Nicole smiled.
“What makes you think we have everything we need? No one knows how long the polar night is going to last, and without grow lights, we can’t keep producing food.
“The wealthy neighborhoods have access to information the rest of us don’t. I’ve heard there are more disasters coming. For all we know, this villa might not even be safe to live in someday. We have to think about the future,
too.
“I’m not going to lie to you. I’m taking this risk because the Robinsons have something I want, so neither of you needs to feel guilty.”
Neither Jeremy nor Hughie could ever win an argument with Nicole, so that was the end of it.
Nicole didn’t bother coming up with some elaborate excuse. She went straight to the Robinson residence, claiming she had come to check on Eric.
Peter caught on immediately. He showed her to the study, then stayed outside the door.
Nicole got right to the point. “If I bring Marcus back alive, I don’t want the ten thousand pounds of grain. I want the helicopter on your roof.”
Eric clearly hadn’t expected that. He was so irritated he actually laughed. “You don’t ask for much, do you, Ms. Floyd?”
Nicole didn’t bother pretending otherwise. “With your connections, you can always get another helicopter. But you only have one Marcus. If he dies, you can’t replace him.”
