Chapter 591
Half an hour later, Nicole and Zeph returned with the truck.
To keep from being spotted, everyone put on night-vision goggles and drove with the headlights off. They stopped several ridges away from the stronghold and concealed both vehicles in the woods.
After putting on their protective gear and checking their weapons, they followed Diana into the mountains.
They crossed ridge after ridge in total darkness, quietly making their way toward the gang’s stronghold. The closer they got, the more carefully they moved.
Zeph had years of reconnaissance experience. Using the new high-definition night-vision goggles, he examined footprints, broken branches, and other signs along the way to figure out which trails the gang used most often and roughly how much traffic each one saw.
Whenever he spotted signs that a route was regularly patrolled, he immediately led the group around it.
Diana didn’t say anything, but she was impressed.
Lookout posts were scattered throughout the mountains. The fact that she had made it through undetected on her last two trips had mostly come down to luck.
It had taken her several scouting trips to get a clear picture of the area, yet Zeph could spot potential danger almost immediately.
Diana pointed out several lookout posts along the way. There was still plenty of time before the scheduled exchange, and the guards would eventually change shifts. Taking them out now would only alert the others.
So the group slipped past them instead. More than two hours later, they reached a spot just over 200 yards from the main cave entrance and pulled out their binoculars to get a closer look.
A hidden lookout post sat to the right of the entrance, with three armed men standing guard.
Nicole studied the contours of the mountain, trying to figure out where the other exits might be.
Since Diana knew the area best, Nicole said, “Stay here and keep an eye on things. Zeph and I will look for the other exits.”
Hughie was worried about them and offered to come along, but Zeph turned him down. “Cola’s enough. The more people we bring, the easier we’ll be to spot.”
No matter where the exits were, anyone using them would leave some kind of trail. With Cola’s nose, they only had to pick up a human scent and follow it.
Besides, Nicole and Zeph could both handle themselves if something went wrong. If things got really bad, Nicole still had her storage space as a last resort.
