Chapter 60
“Who the hell are you calling a freeloader?” Edward roared.
“If the shoe fits.” Nicole let out a sharp laugh. “And where do you get the nerve to keep pushing me like this?”
Before he could respond, her blade drove straight into his thigh. He screamed and dropped to the ground. The others rushed to help him up.
“Nicole, come on… Let’s talk this out. You’re going too far.”
She didn’t even look back as she headed upstairs. “That was your leg. Next time, it’ll be your heart. Try to appreciate being alive.”
No one dared to chase her anymore. Their faces twisted with resentment, but that was as far as it went.
Behind the door, Mary, her hair uneven and hacked off, was shaking with anger.
Useless! Every single one of them!
When Nicole reached the 17th floor, she stopped short.
The stairwell door looked like it had grown spikes. More accurately, it had been covered in welded nails, all pointing outward.
That wasn’t just one door, but all three of them.
Forget people, even a rat wouldn’t get through that.
Three men and one woman were still working, sparks flying as they welded more metal into place.
Jeremy lifted his protective mask when he saw Nicole.
“What do you think? Not bad, right?”
While scavenging for supplies, they had found welding equipment, rebar, and nails. After that, they turned the entire 18th floor into a fortress.
At least now, they could sleep without constantly worrying someone would break in.
Nicole didn’t know what to say except give them a thumbs-up.
Rumors about the 18th floor having supplies had spread. Edward and Mary definitely had a hand in that.
Jeremy and Hughie figured it was better to build a solid defense than stay on edge all the time.
Maybe this was what teamwork looked like. Nicole had to admit, she wouldn’t have come up with this herself. She actually felt a little relieved.
“Whoa, you brought back a dog?” Jeremy’s eyes lit up. “Hughie, looks like we’re having meat stew tonight.”
Cola turned around immediately.
Yeah, no, thanks. He was done here.
Nicole crouched down, soothing Cola before looking up at Jeremy, her voice turning cold.
“This is my dog. If you touch a single hair on him, I’ll cook you instead.”

“When did you start keeping a dog?” Jeremy frowned. “That’s obviously a stray.”
“Isn’t that the one that used to hang around outside the complex?” Hughie squinted. “I remember you feeding him sometimes.”
“He saved my life once.” Nicole’s tone was firm, leaving no room for misunderstanding. “I didn’t bring him back for food. If anyone here even thinks about it, I won’t hold back.”
They had brought back jerky, sausage, and hot dogs from the office building. They were careful with what they ate, but they weren’t desperate for meat.
Still, in times like this, plenty of people had already slaughtered their pets just to survive. No one would waste supplies on them.
Food meant life. People were starving to death every day.
Not just Jeremy and Hughie, but even Beatrice didn’t quite get it.
