Hughie brought up the supplies with Nicole.

“There are too many people watching us where we live. Can we leave everything with you for now and pick it up once we find somewhere safer to store it?”

They already had to keep the windows shut whenever they cooked. Bringing home meat would draw even more attention.

Nicole had no problem with that. “Sure. I have more ways to trade for things around here anyway. If you ever want meat or anything else, just give me a heads-up. If I can get it, I will.”

That immediately lifted everyone’s spirits. For the first time in a long while, they had something to look forward to.

As the meal was winding down, Jeremy brought up something important. “Nicole, we’re thinking about quitting the security patrol.”

Now that they had enough supplies to get by, there was no reason to keep risking their lives for the job.

Nicole was glad to hear it. “That’s probably for the best. It’s too dangerous out there during the polar night. You can always find work again once this is over.”

After they finished eating, they spent a little while playing with Cola before getting ready to leave.

Nicole also gave the two couples some mung beans and soybeans they could sprout at home.

They couldn’t live on the same thing every day. At least this would give them a little variety.

She also pulled a key from her pocket.

“The villa district is still pretty safe, and I don’t think things will get too chaotic here anytime soon. Our other house is sitting empty anyway, so you can stay there for now. If anything changes later, we’ll figure it out then.”

She made the offer because of the way they had handled things today.

If the villa district ever did become unsafe and she needed the house back, she trusted them to leave without making an issue of

Jeremy shook his head. “Thanks, but you’ve already done more than enough for us. Besides, we have more supplies now. When the time comes, we can find a bigger place ourselves.”

After closing the courtyard gate, Nicole went back inside and sat quietly on the couch. The easy mood from dinner was gone, replaced by a faint sense of unease.
