Chapter 604
The Robinsons were basically holding the neighborhood together. If they were on board, no one was going to object.
Besides, the plan meant extra income and fewer patrol shifts. Only an idiot would vote against it. If any of the new tenants caused trouble, whoever vouched for them would be held responsible.
The proposal passed unanimously.
Nicole gave Marcus a thumbs-up, and he immediately perked up.
Remembering Zeph’s warning, she decided not to make her involvement too obvious. Instead of going directly to Jeremy and Hughie, she talked to Sven first.
Sven caught on right away. “Hahaha! You really do have more pull around here, Nicole. I brought this up with Marcus before, and he shot me down immediately. Guess it had to come from you.”
Not long after that, Hughie called her over the radio.
“Jeremy and I have been looking for a bigger place. Sven said there are a few houses available in your neighborhood. Think we’d have a shot at one?”
They were only hoping for a bigger place. They didn’t expect Sven to suggest a villa.
“They should work, but people have died in them.” Nicole smiled. “If that doesn’t bother you, come by when you have time and take a look.”
“We already quit our jobs. We’ll head over now.”
The rent probably wouldn’t be cheap, but they could at least see the places before deciding.
Half an hour later, all four of them arrived. Nicole took them around to see the empty villas.
The bodies had been removed and burned, but no one bothered cleaning up afterward. The houses were a mess, and dark bloodstains still marked some of the floors and walls.
Before the disasters, most people couldn’t have been paid enough to live in a house where someone had died.
Now, no one cared. The living were a lot more dangerous than the dead.
After looking through all the vacant houses, they didn’t choose the biggest one. The rent was bound to be high, and a larger house would only be harder to defend.
They settled on Villa 42, which had a layout similar to Villa 50. The two couples planned to keep living together. A perimeter wall had already been half built around the property, and they could finish it once the polar night was over.
Once they picked the house, Nicole stayed out of the rent negotiations, but Sven volunteered to handle them.
Marcus named his price right away. “A hundred pounds of rice or flour a month.”
Sven pulled him aside and lowered his voice. “Marcus, they’re Nicole’s friends. Even if you won’t cut them a break, do it for her.
Marcus rolled his eyes. “We used to pay one security guard almost 20 pounds of grain. They’re getting an entire villa. A hundred pounds is already a discount because of you guys.”
“It’s the polar night,” Sven continued to negotiate. “Between the two couples, they can put one person on patrol every shift. You can’t charge them based on what things cost during the polar day.”
