Sven never said it outright, but the four of them knew Marcus only agreed to such cheap rent because of Nicole and Zeph.

To thank them, they talked about splitting the supplies from the raid evenly.

Nicole didn’t expect her role in all this to be so obvious. “How about this? Zeph and I will take one share. Consider the rest our housewarming gift to you.”

She wasn’t short on supplies, anyway. Taking a token share was enough, and it kept things clear between everyone.

There were six empty villas in the neighborhood, but rich people were never short on ways to look out for themselves. With everyone hungry and freezing, some of them had gotten especially creative.

They still looked respectable on the surface, but behind closed doors, a few had quietly stripped the abandoned houses of diesel generators and solar equipment, either keeping them or trading them for supplies.

Marcus was too slow to catch on. By the time he realized what was happening, the generators had already been taken apart and hauled away.

Everyone involved was once wealthy and well respected. Besides, the Robinsons had plenty of generators of their own, so no one bothered making an issue of it.

That left Hughie and the others with one immediate problem: electricity. Without lights, the house would be pitch-black, and they wouldn’t be able to grow anything indoors.

Solar power was useless during the polar night, while diesel generators cost a fortune. Even if they spent most of what they had on one, they still wouldn’t have enough fuel to keep it running.

The authorities had anticipated the polar night and rolled out several emergency solutions, including basic human-powered

generators.

Since the four of them had worked for the authorities for years, they were familiar with the equipment.

The principle was simple. Mechanical energy was converted into electricity.

It wasn’t exactly cutting-edge technology. They had already used something similar back on the 18th floor, generating power by pedaling stationary bikes.

Back then, one of the men was in poor shape, and the other was still recovering from an illness, so Nicole easily outperformed

both of them.

The newer generators had been improved since then. They were easier to pedal and converted energy much more efficiently.

As long as they put in enough time on the pedals, they should be able to generate enough electricity for basic lighting and grow lights for their plants and animals.

The only downside was the price.
