The Apocalypse Survival Manual (Three Days Before Doomsday, I Stockpiled Billions) novel Chapter 606

Chapter 606

Diana looked at Jeremy. “Teny you. After everything that’s happened, you can still believe in friendship that much. And somehow, the people you trust have never let you down.”

Jeremy had worked in sales and dealt with more than his share of lies, manipulation, and hidden agendas. He had known plenty of coworkers and clients over the years, but Hughie and Nicole were the only people he had ever considered real friends.

Looking back, aside from making some terrible choices in love, he hadn’t gotten much else wrong.

Diana sometimes called him naive, especially for giving medicine to a stranger when he had no idea whether she could be trusted.

Jeremy never argued. He just smiled.

He knew Diana only became so guarded because she had been hurt too many times.

Over the years, plenty of people tried to team up with him and Hughie, but they turned them all down.

Growing up in an orphanage, they had seen the best and worst of people at an early age, and those lessons stayed with them. Unless they knew exactly what kind of person someone was, they weren’t willing to put their lives in that person’s hands.

Diana was different. She grew up in a loving family and was perfectly capable of taking care of herself. She only joined up with other people because survival was easier in a group, and that was exactly what kept getting her betrayed.

Jeremy learned a different set of lessons growing up. He knew when to stand his ground and when to make himself look harmless. Take away his terrible judgment when it came to relationships, and he was actually sharper than most people. He just didn’t advertise it.

Everyone had secrets. Hughie did. Beatrice did. Zeph did. Nicole definitely did.

But whatever they were hiding, none of it had ever been used against him. They had always treated him well, and that was enough for him.

After putting away their shares of the supplies, the four talked it over and took cigarettes, alcohol, and cured meat to the government trading hall, where they traded everything for a basic generator.

Jeremy and Hughie took care of patrol duty, while Diana and Beatrice stayed home and took turns pedaling the generator.

With patrol teams making regular rounds outside, the neighborhood was still relatively safe.

It was the best sleep any of them had gotten since leaving the government base.

During one of her patrols, Nicole happened to run into Sven.
