Chapter 511
Poppy was already 11 and more than capable of defending herself. Most grown men wouldn’t stand a chance against her. “Zeph, Nicole, I can take care of myself and Cola. You two go. I’ll be fine.”
She refused to stay at Sven’s place. If anyone tried to hurt her, she had weapons and knew exactly how to use them.
Over the years, Zeph had taught Poppy everything he knew. She was smart, disciplined, and exceptionally talented.
She might only be 11, but even the Robinsons’ security team knew better than to underestimate her. She even started teaching Brandon a few things.
Nicole and Zeph respected her decision. Sooner or later, she would grow up and have to learn to handle things on her own.
The two of them drove to the neighborhood entrance and picked up Gabrielle and Derek.
The city wasn’t very large, so it didn’t take long to reach the research institute. Armed soldiers were stationed at the entrance.
They drove into the apartment complex reserved for institute employees. The moment the car stopped in front of the building, Gabrielle jumped out and rushed inside.
Victor’s apartment was on the second floor. Earlier, Michelle Goodman’s screams were agonizing to hear, but now, the apartment was eerily silent. The only sound was Lydia crying softly.
Gabrielle immediately panicked. “Michelle? Michelle…!”
Derek quickly caught her by the arm. “Mom, careful.”
Nicole and Zeph hurried in behind them, carrying their medical supplies.
The moment they reached the second floor, the metallic smell of blood hit them, followed by Lydia’s heartbroken sobs.
They pushed open the door and found Victor sitting beside the bed, cradling a thin woman whose lower body was soaked in blood. He stared ahead in shock, tears streaking the scratched lenses of his glasses.
Lydia stood nearby, crying so hard that she could barely catch her breath.
“W-What happened?” Gabrielle nearly collapsed. “Michelle, I brought someone who can help. You’re going to be okay…”
“Mom… Michelle’s gone.”
Gabrielle staggered. Derek quickly caught her before she fell.
She refused to believe it. She pushed him away, rushed to the bedside, and checked beneath Michelle’s nose for any sign of breath. After several long seconds, a broken cry tore from her throat.
“Michelle, open your eyes. I brought someone who can help. This is all my fault. If I’d only been faster, if I’d gotten back a few minutes sooner…”
A small charcoal brazier was burning in the room, keeping the worst of the cold at bay.
Nicole stepped forward and checked Michelle’s breathing. Nothing. Her body was still warm and limp, which meant she couldn’t have been gone for long.
Nicole still remembered attending Victor and Michelle’s wedding.
There wasn’t any alcohol or fancy food, just a simple meal with barely any meat or cooking oil and only a handful of guests.
Michelle had been cheerful and full of life. She always treated Nicole with genuine warmth and respect, and there was something naturally likable about the way she spoke.

She was smart and easy to get along with. She even went with Victor to the villa district during the holidays to bring them gifts. The young couple seemed deeply in love, and Victor smiled a lot more since marrying her.
Nicole never imagined Michelle would be gone so suddenly.
She was petite and painfully thin, making her swollen belly look even more unnaturally large. The sight made Nicole’s skin
