That struck her as odd. Who would risk traveling through the polar night just to see her? Anyone who showed up at a time like this had to be dealing with something serious.

Zeph was concerned about her safety, so he went with her.

Nicole assumed it would be someone from Oakhaven Gardens.

Instead, she found Gabrielle and Derek waiting outside.

Gabrielle looked frantic. The moment she saw Nicole, she hurried over. “Nicole, do you know how to deliver a baby?”

The question caught Nicole completely off guard.

She had spent the past few years studying alternative medicine and learning basic surgical techèriques, but pregnancy and childbirth had never even crossed her mind.

When she first woke up after being reborn, she expected it to be just her and Cola against the world. Even after meeting Zeph and falling in love with him, she never seriously considered getting pregnant or having children.

In a world devastated by natural disasters, staying alive was hard enough for a healthy adult. For a pregnant woman, childbirth could easily become life-threatening.

Many women stopped getting their periods because they weren’t eating enough. Even those who didn’t were at greater risk of complications if they were malnourished, and both mother and baby could suffer.

Beatrice was proof of that. She was once strong and healthy, but after her miscarriage and everything that followed, she had wasted away to skin and bones.

Even after recovering and spending the past two years rebuilding her strength, she never fully returned to the way she was before.

Gabrielle was intelligent and levelheaded, but apparently, even she wasn’t able to let go of the old idea that the family needed another generation.

Then again, there might have been other reasons. Either way, it was their family’s decision, and Nicole had no place judging it. “I only studied alternative medicine for about a year. I barely know anything. I can deal with headaches, minor illnesses, and simple injuries, but I have no idea how to deliver a baby.”

Gabrielle gripped her hand tightly. “Victor’s wife is having a difficult labor, and we can’t find a doctor. Please. Could you at least come take a look? I’m begging you!”

Derek explained from beside her, “We’ve spent the past few months looking for someone with experience in childbirth, but we couldn’t find anyone, Eventually, we found a woman who claimed she’d worked as a midwife. Turns out she lied and doesn’t know what she’s doing. Michelle’s in obstructed labor now.”

Seeing how desperate they were, Nicole hesitated. She couldn’t bring herself to turn them away.

Over the years, familiar faces had disappeared one after another. Aside from Jeremy, Hughie, and the others, the Goodmans were among the few people Nicole was still close to.

Nicole knew Gabrielle well enough to understand that she would never beg for help unless she had run out of options.

“I really don’t know anything about delivering babies, but I can come take a look.”

In the end, she still couldn’t say no.

Gabrielle’s voice trembled. “Thank you, Nicole.”
