Chapter 62
Even knowing how capable Cola was, Nicole still wanted him to become stronger.
Hunger changed people. When survival was on the line, not many could resist the temptation of meat.
Cola had to be stronger.
Zeph’s condition was simple.
“I’ll train your dog. You teach Poppy how to read.”
Nicole blinked, caught off guard.
“That’s it? Poppy’s smart and well-behaved. You could teach her yourself.”
Zeph’s expression shifted, just slightly. “I’m not good with that kind of stuff. Training dogs is easier.”
Nicole felt a little awkward, but she nodded. “Alright. Deal.”
He would train Cola, and she would teach Poppy.
The moment she opened the door, a dark shape lunged at her. Cola pressed close, whining low. He was restless and uneasy, his paws pawing at her.
Nicole rubbed his head. “It’s okay. I’m not going anywhere.”
Stray dogs weren’t easy to calm down.
She gave him another hot dog.
Still, he stayed on edge. Wherever she went, he followed, never letting her out of his sight.
She was exhausted and starving. Running into Cola again was worth celebrating.
So, Nicole pulled out a proper meal of ribs, pork, roasted chicken, and a cold beer.
Even though Cola had already eaten, he couldn’t stop staring. His eyes followed every bite, drool practically dripping.
Nicole picked out a plain rib for him, then settled in to eat while watching a show.
Cola couldn’t take it. He jumped onto the couch and leaned against her, nudging her shoulder with his paw.
When she ignored him, he ran off, grabbed his food bowl, and carried it back over.
Human. Food. Now.
Nicole laughed.
“Smart boy.”
She tossed him a bone.
“Don’t overdo it. You’ll get plenty from now on.”
After eating, it was time to teach him where to go to the bathroom.
Not just Cola. The breeding rabbits and their litter, too.

Even with the balcony sealed, the dampness was getting to them. They looked sluggish.
She laid down layers of cardboard and moved them into the bathroom, and they perked up a bit. Once the rabbits got used to her, they started wandering around freely.
The moment Cola saw them, his eyes lit up. He lunged instinctively.
Nicole shot him a sharp look.
“No!”
In the future, whether she and Cola ate well or barely scraped by depended on those rabbits.
After spending some time with Nicole, Cola understood her temper well enough. He held back, even if his instincts screamed otherwise.
He wasn’t hungry now. He might try again later.
Cola was smart.
After just over an hour of training, he learned to use a trash bin lined with a black bag in the bathroom.
But Nicole had no luck with the rabbits. No matter how much she tried, they just didn’t get it. She ended up cleaning up after them several times a day.
Nicole sighed.
“Cola, you’re in charge of them now.”
A good dog should help its human out.
By the time Nicole finished everything, it was already late at night. She climbed into bed, but Cola dragged his bed in after her.
Fine.
He didn’t feel safe yet. She understood that.
She woke up several times throughout the night. Every time, it was Cola.
He was hypersensitive to noise. Even the slightest sound downstairs would have him up, standing guard at the
