Chapter 63
Nicole had just finished tidying up when Hughie came knocking.
Time to head out and complete today’s mission: spend the 200 grand.
Beatrice stayed behind, juggling childcare and now dog duty.
There was a new punching bag hanging in the hallway. Hughie and Jeremy had dragged it back for her so she could train instead of using them as practice targets.
They reached the department store around 9 a.m. The place was still packed, lines stretching everywhere.
The loudspeakers crackled. “Today’s food supply is sold out. Please come earlier tomorrow.”
“What? I’ve been here since midnight!”
“I got here at nine last night and still didn’t get anything!”
Complaints erupted instantly, frustration, anger, and desperation bubbling up all at once.
But what could they do? Armed soldiers stood guard. Even if they rushed in, they wouldn’t get a thing.
Faces worn down by exhaustion lingered, unwilling to give up.
In the end, one by one, they left.
Almost everyone who came here was after food. Anything else was just extra,
Once the crowd thinned, the massive mall felt empty.
Compared to last time, there was noticeably less merchandise. Anything edible had already been cleared out.
They were selling purified tap water now at 7.50 dollars a gallon, and you had to bring your own container.
Hughie and Jeremy immediately lost interest.
After seeing bodies floating in the flood, that water wasn’t exactly appealing.
Most of what remained were appliances, clothes, blankets, and general supplies.
Even with cash, there wasn’t much worth buying.
There were still two inflatable rafts for sale. Hughie considered grabbing one as backup, but when he saw the price, which was ten thousand each, he shut up fast.
Nicole had a clear goal. She was preparing for the deep freeze.
She had enough supplies herself, but she couldn’t just hand things out. It had to look normal.
Daily necessities had skyrocketed in price, but clothes and bedding hadn’t changed much. Everyone was saving their money for food.
As they browsed, something caught her eye.
Fur coats.
They were full-length mink, soft to the touch and incredibly warm.
She checked the price. Ten thousand each. They were available in men’s and women’s styles, which cost about the

same.
Nicole didn’t hesitate. She bought seven; she even got one for Cola. She would adjust it later.
Just like that, she spent 70 thousand.
Hughie’s heart nearly gave out. “Maybe we should go with something cheaper?”
“If we don’t spend it now, are you planning to use it as toilet paper later?” she replied.
She kept going.
Heavy winter jackets, down coats, thermal layers, blankets, socks, and boots. She told them to grab whatever they
needed.
Too bad there weren’t any pet supplies. Otherwise, she would’ve stocked up for Cola, too.
They were still picking things out when a middle-aged man approached, lowering his voice.
“Hey, are you looking for food?”
He had that shifty look to him; definitely not someone to trust at first glance.
Nicole had already noticed him watching earlier while she was buying coats, thinking he might be a pickpocket.
