Chapter 622
Nicole’s heart nearly stopped
She immediately started checking Zeph for symptoms.
It didn’t make sense. In his previous life, he hadn’t gotten sick until much later. And ever since Nicole came back from Grayport, she made both Zeph and Poppy wear masks whenever they went out on patrol.
As soon as they came home, they had to spray down their dothes with rubbing alcohol, change immediately, and soak what they had worn in disinfectant.
Cola didn’t have a mask that fit properly, and Nicole figured it was better to be too careful than not careful enough. For the past few weeks, she didn’t let Cola go out on patrol at all. Even when Dumbo came by looking for him, she refused to let him leave.
“Ah! Hahaha! It’s daylight! It’s daylight! The sun’s out!”
Someone outside suddenly started yelling at the top of his lungs and running around in excitement.
He wasn’t alone. A whole crowd had poured outside.
Rich kids, socialites, families who had lost everything, men and women, young and old. People laughed and cried in the haze, hugging each other and shouting, “It’s daylight! We made it! We survived! Woohoo!”
Nicole’s alarm shot up. She immediately shut every door and window, then pulled out the air purifier and started simmering a medicinal herbal mixture she had put together herself.
Everyone had to drink a bowl, including Cola. If he refused, she would make him drink it anyway.
The smog affected animals, too. For the past two weeks, Nicole had tested the remedy on rabbits, mixing the brewed medicine into their cracked corn. After watching them closely, she saw no signs of any adverse reaction.
They were just about to drink the medicine when an emergency announcement came over the radio.
The smog came from a volcanic eruption in Ardelon and might be carrying an unknown pathogen. Survivors were strongly warned not to go outside.
If they absolutely had to leave home, they were told to take every precaution, wear masks, wash their hands often, and disinfect their clothes as soon as they returned.
The moment the announcement ended, the people still celebrating outside went pale. Everyone covered their noses and mouths and raced home.
This wasn’t ordinary fog. The smog carried contamination from nuclear wastewater, and the realization sent a wave of panic through the crowd.
They might already have been exposed. No one knew how dangerous it was or what they were supposed to do next.
Within minutes, everyone became terrified of the smog. Survivors barricaded themselves inside their homes, too scared to go
back outside.
The sudden terror made the endless polar night seem almost preferable by comparison.
Nicole brought out the rubbing alcohol and disinfectant, and the three of them cleaned every corner of the house.
The disinfectant smelled awful, but they had no choice but to put up with it. Anything was better than breathing in the smog.
The radio crackled. Brandon was calling Poppy, and she could hear him coughing.
Poppy panicked and immediately cut the connection, as if leaving it open for even one more second might somehow let the smog come through the radio and into the house.

A moment later, she realized how rude that must’ve seemed and looked helplessly at Nicole.
Nicole almost laughed. “It’s fine. Smog can’t come through the radio.”
Only then did Poppy relax a little. She called Brandon back and asked softly, “Brandon, are you okay?”
“I’m fine. I probably just caught a cold from being out in the cold yesterday.”
“Okay. Get some rest, and exercise when you’re feeling better. There’s smog outside now, so don’t go out unless you absolutely have to.”
After ending the call, Poppy still looked worried. “Do you think Brandon’s infected?”
