The Apocalypse Survival Manual (Three Days Before Doomsday, I Stockpiled Billions) novel Chapter 625

Chapter 625

If supplies ever became scarceenough, Nicole could always take the poultry back out and eat them.

As for Ash, Snowy, and their six offspring, the pair had provided Nicole with a steady supply of meat for years.

After all that time, she couldn’t pretend she wasn’t attached to them.

Maybe the rabbits were simply hardier than the poultry, or maybe the medicine Nicole tested on them had helped. Either way, none of them were wheezing. They were still calmly munching on hay.

In the end, Nicole couldn’t bring herself to kill them. She thoroughly disinfected the rabbit enclosure inside and out, left them plenty of hay and water, and decided to let fate take its course.

Nicole’s original plan was now completely off track.

She initially planned to wait until polar night ended, then join the alternative medicine research institute and work under Mitchell and Wesley.

Once the smog arrived, she would secretly leave the medicinal herbs outside the police station, then use her position at the institute to quietly guide the researchers toward the right treatment.

That way, they could shorten the development process without anyone becoming suspicious of her.

She didn’t want to deliver the herbs directly to the research institute for two reasons.

First, she didn’t know enough about how the institute handled supplies. There was always a chance the herbs could be redirected somewhere else.

Second, such a huge amount of medicinal herbs appearing out of nowhere would almost certainly raise questions.

The institute might report it to the Grayport police, and if anyone investigated closely enough, there was no guarantee the delivery wouldn’t eventually lead back to her.

After weighing everything, Nicole ultimately decided to leave the herbs with Jasper. He knew exactly what they were meant for, and there was a good chance he would help keep her involvement quiet.

Someone as sharp as Jasper had probably figured out far more than he ever let on. He really was an unusual man.

Even so, Nicole couldn’t fully relax until she confirmed for herself that Jasper had turned the herbs over to the research institute.

So she decided to go out again.

This time, she put on protective gear and left openly.

On the way, she tossed a large bag of medicinal herbs into Sven’s villa and told him to brew some for himself and Brandon.

She didn’t stop there. Jeremy and Hughie got some, too, along with Weasel.

She made every delivery from a distance to avoid direct contact.

The herbs had already been chopped up and thoroughly mixed together. Unless someone knew exactly what they were looking for, there was no way to identify the formula.

Once she finished making the deliveries, Nicole headed to the small two-bedroom apartment she bought.

With Weasel and the others gone, the floor felt much roomier. The residents from Oakhaven Gardens weren’t packed in as tightly anymore, either.

Some of the families with a little more to work with had rented the empty units, so two households no longer had to squeeze into a single apartment with barely enough space to move around.

The arrangement worked out well enough. Weasel and the others knew these people were struggling as well, so they charged only a small amount of rent. In return, someone was there to keep an eye on the apartments.

Their only real condition was that the tenants take care of the place.

Isaac and Ethan lived next door. The moment they heard movement in the hallway, the door opened, and Ethan stepped out with a knife in his hand.

Seeing someone covered head to toe in protective gear, he immediately went on alert. “Who are you?”

Nicole almost laughed. “It’s me.”

Ethan stared at her. “Nicole?”

They hadn’t seen each other in three years, and he was clearly glad to see her. “Are you and Mr. Dawson doing okay?”

They had heard about what happened in the villa district during polar night. Just thinking about it afterward left the whole group shaken, and none of them quite knew how to feel about it.

Kyle had treated them fairly well for the most part. Whenever the homeowners caused trouble, he was usually the one who stepped in and tried to keep things under control.

If the residents hadn’t kept pushing things further and further, maybe none of it would’ve happened.

Whatever else could be said about Kyle, he still let them leave in the end and paid them every bit of the wages and food they were owed. Years of disasters and constant conflict had hardened him, making him more calculating and ruthless than he once was.
