Chapter 632
Before Nicole and Zeph got sick, not knowing whether they had been infected had kept them constantly on edge. Once they knew for certain, though, they actually felt calmer.
They tried to reassure each other.
“It’s okay. We’ve got it much easier than most people.”
The one piece of good news was that Cola had pulled through. His symptoms improved a little each day, his appetite gradually came back, and before long, he was enthusiastically wagging his tail at all three of them agam.
In the end, being strong and healthy really did make a difference.
At first, Nicole worried they might infect Cola again, so she isolated him in the room next door. But he kept scratching at the door and whining pitifully.
With no other choice, Nicole called Mitchell. He had been infected too, but as a doctor, he knew what to do.
He caught it early and started treatment while his symptoms were still mild. His voice sounded weak, but at least he wasn’t bedridden.
He never would’ve guessed that the first confirmed recovery from the smog virus would be a dog.
Mitchell came over specifically to examine Cola. One look at the dog’s sturdy build told him a lot.
“The virus is aggressive, but once the body fights it off, it develops antibodies. Based on the cases we’ve seen so far, there’s no sign that the virus has mutated.”
The smog itself carried the virus, so there was no way to avoid exposure entirely. All anyone could do was keep disinfecting and lower the risk of infection as much as possible.
Nicole understood. As long as the virus didn’t mutate, Cola’s antibodies should keep him from getting sick again.
She went back inside and brought out ten pounds of cured sausage and bacon, several salted dried fish, and twenty pounds of soybean powder she’d prepared earlier.
“Dr. Chapman, my family put these together for you. I meant to bring them over a few days ago, but things got so hectic that I never had the chance.
“I heard a lot of the doctors here are sick but still working. Use this to make sure everyone gets a decent meal. You need to keep your strength up if you’re going to recover and keep treating patients.”
“No, we can’t take this. It’s too valuable…”
“Dr. Chapman, if all of you go down, who’s going to take care of everyone else? We’re counting on you, too.” Nicole firmly pressed the supplies into his hands. “Take it. I’ll find a way to get more food with some real nutritional value.”
Mitchell was visibly moved. Between his congestion and the emotion in his voice, his words came out rough.
“Nicole, Zeph, thank you. On behalf of everyone at the research institute, thank you both.”
Nicole shook her head. “We should be the ones thanking you. If we hadn’t come here, God knows how bad things would’ve gotten by now.”
After seeing Mitchell off, Nicole brought Cola back into their room.

The three of them continued to have good days and bad, with symptoms fading for a while before suddenly flaring
p again.
Whenever Nicole’s fever spiked, nausea churned in her stomach. Her head throbbed as though someone were drilling into her skull, while sharp aches spread through her muscles and joints.
Every coughing fit left her chest rattling, her throat raw, and a deep pain burning through her lungs. Sometimes, after several minutes of coughing nonstop, she genuinely felt as though she might cough up something from inside her body.
And this was still considered a mild case. She couldn’t imagine what the critically ill patients were going through.
Each of them kept an oxygen tank close by and used it whenever they became short of breath. Whenever they felt well enough, they disinfected the room again.
Thanks to the autopsies Howard and Nicole had performed, the medical team now had a much clearer picture of how the virus affected the body, allowing Wesley’s team to adjust their treatments quickly.
