Chapter 636
For Wesley, a man who had devoted his entire life to medicine, to look this troubled, the side effects had to be
serious.
“The dose is extremely high. It may kill the virus, but it can also damage the liver and lungs. Patients could suffer badly after taking it, and their organs may take much longer to recover. It could also weaken their immune systems significantly. In severe cases, some of the damage may be permanent.”
For now, that was only Wesley’s prediction. They still needed to test it on actual patients.
“Professor, let me try it.”
Mitchell broke into another coughing fit.
“I’ve been on medication for days, and I’m not getting any better. If we keep treating me the same way, we’ll just burn through more of our limited herbs. I might as well try the concentrated dose.”
If it worked, they could start using the treatment right away. If it didn’t, they would have to find another solution.
Either way, they were running out of time.
Wesley carried the responsibility of finding a treatment that could save countless lives, while Mitchell was willing to risk his own life to test it.
The mood in the lab turned heavy.
Nicole barely had time to sit down these days, but working alongside some of the country’s top medical experts taught her things no textbook ever could.
Wesley, in particular, was patient and easy to approach. Whenever she asked him a question, he explained it carefully and often went into even more detail than she expected.
Nicole thought for a moment, then suggested a compromise.
“The concentrated dose might be too hard on the body. What if we cut it in half and give it in two doses instead? If that still doesn’t work, we can try the full dose.”
Splitting the treatment into two doses sounded simple, but it came with one major problem: it used far more medicinal herbs than giving the concentrated pill in a single dose.
At that rate, their current supply wouldn’t come close to being enough.
It wasn’t just the survivors in Westbridge and Grayport waiting for medicine, either. People in Pinecrest, Halloway, and countless other cities were waiting, too.
So far, Grayport’s research institute developed the most effective formula. Even if they managed to produce a working treatment, they would still have to send medicine to other cities.
Of all the cities involved, Westbridge’s authorities were the quickest to look out for their own interests.
Claiming they received a large anonymous charitable donation, they had already stationed people outside the research institute, obviously waiting to take a share of the finished medicine the second it was ready.
Nicole didn’t want Wesley, especially at his age, carrying a decision like that on his shoulders alone. “Professor Dixon, why don’t we develop both versions and let the authorities decide which one to use? Maybe they can also send people out to search for more of the two herbs we need.”

Mitchell immediately agreed. “Professor, those herbs are rare, but someone still managed to donate that much at
After discussing it, they decided to develop both treatment options at the same time.
As a student of alternative medicine, Nicole wasn’t about to miss the process of making the new drug. She stayed close, watched every step, and absorbed everything she could.
Medicine could heal, but it could also harm. The difference often came down to dosage. Even arsenic had medicinal uses in tiny amounts, while too much could kill a person almost instantly.
After three straight days with almost no rest, Wesley finally hit his limit. The moment he sat down, he fell asleep.
Zeph made him a cup of warm drink and set it beside him, then draped a coat over his shoulders.
Many of the institute’s machines had broken down over the years, so the team had to work around one limitation after another. In the end, they used traditional preparation methods to turn Wesley’s formula into concentrated pills.
Mitchell didn’t hesitate. He swallowed one right away.
About half an hour later, a crushing pain tore through his liver and lungs, as if something were gnawing at him from the inside.
