Chapter 637
e kitchen was cold and nearly empty. The cafeteria meals were enough to keep people from going hungry, but they weren’t exactly nutritious.
Even with the food Nicole donated, there were simply too many mouths to feed. Getting a couple slices of cured meat with a meal was already considered a luxury.
Nicole made Mitchell a cup of soy milk, then cooked rice with cured meat and topped it with two eggs. She made enough for both Mitchell and Wesley.
Howard already had Valerie taking care of him, and Nicole decided it was best not to get involved/
Jason had a way of turning everything around him into chaos. Staying out of that situation seemed like the safest choice.
“Dr. Chapman, you need to eat well and get your strength back. You have to take the second dose in three days.” For the next few days, Nicole took care of all three of Mitchell’s meals and had Zeph bring them over at regular times. When there wasn’t much to cook with, she made a simple egg soup with black moss.
For the next three days, Mitchell did little except eat, sleep, and rest.
His condition improved noticeably. He still had a slight fever, dizziness, fatigue, and shortness of breath, but his cough was much better.
With Nicole making sure he got plenty to eat, Mitchell slowly regained his strength and started looking much better.
Then it was time for the second pill.
It still caused intense pain, but this time, he didn’t end up curled on the floor. Instead, violent chills shook his entire body. He drank plenty of warm water, kept himself warm, and slept as much as he could.
Mitchell bounced back quickly. Three days later, his cough was gone. He was still weak and tired, but most of his other symptoms had faded.
He couldn’t push himself yet. Even one flight of stairs left him winded, but there was a good chance that would improve with time.
Meanwhile, the institute also began testing the full-strength pill.
After seeing how badly Mitchell reacted, no one wanted to risk giving it to a critically ill patient. They chose someone with a relatively mild case who was still in decent physical condition.
Of course, “mild” didn’t mean much with this disease. The man was coughing so hard that he could barely catch his breath, and sheer determination seemed to be the only thing keeping him going.
Nicole stared at him for a moment. He looked familiar, but she couldn’t remember where she had seen him before.
“You?” The man seemed just as surprised to see her.
Nicole had never been good at remembering faces, so she gave him an awkward smile. “Yeah.”
When he realized she didn’t recognize him, he added, “After the tsunami. You brought an injured soldier back with you.”
Then it clicked. He must’ve been one of the soldiers who came to pick up the wounded man.

Nicole looked surprised. “How’s that young soldier doing?”

pulled through, thanks to the medicine you gave us. They transferred him to another unit afterward.”
After they talked for a few minutes, Nicole explained all the possible side effects of the new drug. “This treatment is still experimental. You don’t have to take it. It’s completely up to you.”
“I’ll take it,” he answered without hesitation.
If trained soldiers in good physical condition couldn’t handle the treatment, there was even less chance that ordinary patients could.
Sure enough, the pill hit him hard. He clenched his jaw and didn’t make a sound, but the veins stood out on his forehead, and sweat streamed down his face.
“Ugh!”
He suddenly doubled over on the floor and coughed up a mouthful of blood. Small pieces of damaged lung tissue came up with it.
Nicole was afraid he might choke on the blood, so she quickly rolled him onto his side. The rest of the medical team disinfected the area to keep anyone else from being exposed.
Three hours later, the worst of it finally passed, but he was completely spent.
Nicole wasn’t sure he would’ve made it through without the kind of endurance he had built up as a soldier.
