Chapter 640
Luckily, Nicole moved fast enough to dodge it. Otherwise, her shoes would’ve been covered in blood.
Once she saw what had launched itself at her, she was at a loss for words.
This dog really knew how to make an entrance. The last time she saw him, he showed up covered in injuries. Now, he was coughing up blood at her feet.
Cola had already braced himself for a fight before realizing the culprit was his own sidekick. He immediately backed away several steps and let out a low growl, sounding thoroughly annoyed with the mastiff’s antics.
A moment later, though, his growls turned into worried whines.
The two dogs started going back and forth in their own way.
Dumbo stayed sprawled on the ground, coughing as he weakly wagged his tail at Nicole and rolled over to expose his belly.
It had only been a little over a month, but the once-powerful dog was now skin and bones. He looked dangerously close to death.
Nicole sighed. She sprayed disinfectant over the blood first, then thoroughly disinfected the mastiff before dragging him into the yard.
They hadn’t been home in over a month. Zeph and Poppy took care of disinfecting the inside of the villa, while Nicole found some rope and tied Dumbo’s legs so he couldn’t thrash around.
He was almost as big as a grown man, so one full dose should be about right.
While she was at it, Nicole went out back to check on Ash and Snowy.
The smog virus was so aggressive that she half expected to find them dead. Instead, both rabbits were alive, huddled together and calmly chewing on dry hay.
Apparently, the virus didn’t hit animals as hard as it did people. That would also explain why Cola recovered so quickly. The rabbits barely even looked up when Nicole approached.
Cola stayed close to Dumbo. He clearly didn’t want to get sprayed with blood, but he also refused to go far, keeping a worried eye on the sick dog.
Nicole left Dumbo alone for the moment. After disinfecting Cola, she went upstairs.
She had spent more than a month working almost nonstop, aside from the days when she herself was sick. No matter how strong she was, her body had limits.
They had antibodies now, but after seeing how badly some patients at the research institute suffered, Nicole knew just how lucky her family had been.
Even a mild case was miserable. Nicole couldn’t imagine what the severe and critical patients went through. And since viruses could mutate at any time, they still couldn’t let their guard down.
She turned on the air purifier, took a long, hot shower, and soaked everyone’s dirty clothes in disinfectant.
They cleaned everything they could think of: themselves, their belongings, and every room in the house.
Once they were done, Nicole turned on the lights and brought out a full meal of chicken soup, pork, seafood, and several other dishes. The four of them ate until they were completely full.

It was the best meal they’d had since the smog started.
Afterward, Nicole put her protective suit back on and went outside to check on Dumbo.
The big brute was tougher than he looked. He was still alive. Even in his miserable condition, he managed to give Nicole a weak wag of his tail and looked up at her with pleading eyes.
Nicole couldn’t bring herself to leave him like that. She untied his legs and gave him a large bowl of high-calorie dog food.
Even after eating, the shameless dog still refused to leave.
His huge frame was little more than skin and bones now, and he curled up in a corner of the yard, watching Nicole with big, watery eyes as if he were trying his best to look harmless and pathetic.
Was he seriously trying to move in?
“Woof!”
From the rooftop, Cola pressed himself against the glass and barked encouragement down at his seriously ill sidekick
The mastiff lifted his head and looked up at him with a wounded expression.
Nicole rubbed her forehead and quietly shut the door.
