Chapter 641
Alot of people never even lived long enough to get the medicine.
Nicole only had 50 doses, and that damn dog had already used up one of them.
Zeph thought for a moment.
“The virus is worse this time. A lot of people get sick and die within just a few days. Even if you want to give them the medicine, some of them might already be gone by the time you reach them.”
Nicole’s chest tightened.
That was the reality of living through one disaster after another. The apocalypse was unpredictable and brutal.
She picked up the radio and started calling people one by one. She didn’t have any particular order in mind. She simply started with whoever lived closest.
It rang for a long time before someone finally answered. Violent coughing crackled through the speaker, followed by Sven’s hoarse, strained voice.
“Nicole… Are you and Zeph doing okay?”
Poppy stood beside her and asked anxiously, “Sven, is Brandon okay?”
“Poppy? Brandon’s hanging in there. He talks about you every day. Says he has to see you one more time…”
Before he could finish, a weak but violent coughing fit came over the radio. “Poppy…”
At least both father and son were still alive.
Sven was clearly in terrible shape, but he managed to tell them what had happened over the past few days.
A lot of people in the neighborhood had gotten sick.
At first, the radio channel was nonstop panic, shouting, crying, and people begging for medicine. Then, little by little, it fell silent. Now, no one used it anymore.
Every day, more people got sick, and more people died.
The smog hung over the neighborhood in the hot, windless air. At first, there was only a faint smell of decay. Before long, the stench seemed to come from everywhere.
In the end, the Robinsons stepped up first, and the other homeowners followed. Anyone who had a protective suit wore one. Those who didn’t wrapped themselves in layers of sheets or clothing, then dragged the bodies out of the villas, soaked them in gasoline, and burned them.
No one knew exactly how many people had died. Every two or three days, they cleared out more bodies, with the homeowners who were still strong enough taking turns.
Green bottle flies swarmed everywhere. The sight and smell were so awful that some people couldn’t eat for days afterward.
But they had no choice. If they left the bodies there, the stench would become unbearable, and the corpses could lead to more disease or make the virus spread even faster.
Sven had stocked up on some medicine himself. Together with the medicine packets Nicole gave him, he and Brandon didn’t get hit quite as hard as some of the others. Even so, the illness nearly wore them both down to

nothing.
Sen forced himself to stay on his feet so he could take care of Brandon, while the little guy only wanted to see Poppy.
But no matter how many times they called over the radio, no one next door ever answered. It was as if Nicole and the others had disappeared.
People came by every day and pounded desperately on the door of Villa 50. Some begged. Some cursed. But they all wanted the same thing: they wanted to live.
Sven was worried too, but he knew Nicole and Zeph could handle themselves. He figured they must have gone somewhere to find treatment.
When no one answered, some of the more desperate homeowners tried breaking into Villa 50 to look for medicine. Hughie and the others from Villa 42 stopped them several times, and a few fights even broke out.
Hughie’s group could be ruthless when they needed to be. They didn’t hold back. After getting beaten up a few times, the would-be intruders finally gave up.
Nicole didn’t expect Jeremy and the others to keep protecting Villa 50 even though they knew she and Zeph weren’t there.
She smiled faintly, then asked Sven how he was doing.
Sven’s breathing came fast and shallow over the radio. “I started coughing up streaks of blood today. Feels like I’m about to cough up every organ in my body. Fever keeps coming and going.”
“Relax. You’re nowhere near dying yet.”
After spending so much time at the alternative medicine research institute working with cadavers and treating patients, Nicole could make a rough diagnosis even over the radio.
