Nicole laughed in exasperation. “Does he think he’s a person?”

As more infected people recovered, many started planting crops again. But no matter how carefully they tended them, the seeds either failed to sprout or sent up green shoots that soon wilted and turned yellow.

If they couldn’t grow food, they would starve. Panic spread almost immediately.

The authorities soon issued an explanation.

The volcanic ash and smog were mildly acidic, and once they settled on the ground, they contaminated the soil. For the time being, growing anything outdoors was out of the question.
