Chapter 643
Jeremy and Hughie were fine, and both Beatrice and Diana pulled through.
Nicole still had some medicine left and was thinking about giving Marcus a few doses when he suddenly came over the radio, sounding unusually cheerful.
“You’re back?”
He didn’t sound sick at all.
Nicole asked in surprise, “You didn’t get infected?”
Marcus’s fragile ego took an immediate hit. “Were you hoping I’d die?”
“No. I’m impressed by your immune system. Apparently, nothing can take you down.”
“I did get infected.” Just thinking about it made Marcus miserable.
Nicole was speechless. “Then why do you sound so happy?”
“Because I got better.”
Marcus had just returned from Grayport after treatment and sounded downright pleased with himself. “I got lucky. I pulled through.”
Of course. The Robinsons had connections. Even if everyone else ran out of medicine, they never would.
Marcus sprawled across his insanely expensive mattress. “You got lucky too, right?”
Nicole was drinking water and nearly choked. She instinctively glanced at Zeph. “Excuse me?”
“I meant you’re not sick anymore.”
“Yeah.” Nicole couldn’t be bothered with him anymore. “If that’s all, I’m hanging up.’
“Wait.” Marcus immediately grew anxious. “Have you seen my dog? Where the hell did he go?”
“You actually remembered you have a dog?” Nicole walked over to the window and looked down. Through the haze, she could barely make out a shadow moving below. “Maybe somebody caught him and cooked him for dinner.”
When it came down to it, people always put their own families first. The Robinsons had dozens of relatives and couldn’t even guarantee that all of them would survive. A dog was bound to come last. No wonder Dumbo didn’t want to go back.
Then again… Maybe she wasn’t much better.
Nicole quickly prepared a plate of chicken breast and carried it to the backyard for Ash and Snowy.
“Here. Consider this compensation.”
The rebellious rabbits were easy to win over with food. The second they saw the meat, they happily crowded around her again.
Once Sven and Brandon started getting better, Nicole tossed another bottle of medicine over the wall.
“This is for Weasel and the others. Don’t tell them it came from me, and make sure they keep quiet about it.”

Sven didn’t understand. “Wouldn’t it be better if they knew? Then they’d owe you one.”
Nicole smiled. “I don’t need them to.”
She wouldn’t have minded trading the medicine for supplies, but they had nothing she wanted. Since she still had some to spare, she figured she might as well help a few people she knew.
Rather than give the medicine to complete strangers, she would rather save people whose character she knew Maybe one day, she would need their help, too.
Sven looked at her with more than gratitude now. There was genuine respect in his eyes.
“Then I owe both of you one. If you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to ask.”
Now that they had finally survived the smog virus, Nicole felt a huge weight lift from her chest. She laughed.
“Sure. If you ever get your hands on something good, you can pay me back then.”
Nicole rested against Zeph’s shoulder under the warm orange light, and he slipped an arm around her waist.
They only made it through because they had each other.
“Nicole, thank you for staying with me.
Nicole smiled. “I should be thanking you.”
Because she met him, because he always accepted her for who she was, Nicole slowly began to like the person she had become.
Whether she looked at who she was now or thought back on everything she suffered in her previous life, she found herself more capable of understanding and accepting things.
It was as if she had finally shed some of her sharpest edges.
The smog lingered, and the temperature kept rising.
Remembering that volcanic ash was corrosive, Nicole and Zeph took down the electric fencing along the top of the
wall.
Equipment like that was almost impossible to replace now. They might still need it someday.
Dumbo, who had been freeloading off them, came over wagging his tail. He seemed worried Nicole still didn’t like him, so he kept his distance. Seeing the mastiff act so cautiously was both funny and a little exasperating.
Nicole opened the front gate and let him decide for himself whether he wanted to stay or leave.

Chapter 644
Whether he meant it or not, Dumbo still chose to stay.
Nicole didn’t really care. If he ever got tired of living there, he could leave on his own. At least this way, he wouldn’t start thinking of Villa 50 as sotne safe haven he could run back to whenever things went wrong.
After Sven and the others finished their second course of treatment, the authorities finally announced that they had successfully developed a drug to treat the smog virus.
