Chapter 65
The pig lay sprawled across the assault boat, mouth open and gasping hard.
Nicole suddenly pulled out a stun baton from her bag. Two sharp squeals, and the pig went limp.
Hughie and Jeremy just stared.
Zeph spoke first. “We need to butcher it somewhere else.”
There was no way they could bring it back like this. If anyone saw, it would turn into a problem fast.
Jeremy snapped out of it. “What about that construction site we checked before? No one’s around, and it’s not too far.”
They turned the boat and headed in that direction. About four miles out, they came across several half-built, apartment blocks that sat half-submerged in water.
They docked. The three men hauled the pig onto higher ground, while Nicole gave them a butcher’s knife.
She didn’t join in. While they worked, she headed upstairs. The higher she went, the more construction materials she found stacked up. Cement blocks and steel rebar, plenty of it.
Nicole didn’t hesitate.
Her garden space could hold over 63 thousand cubic feet now. There was no reason to leave anything behind. She took everything she could.
It might not seem useful now, but when things got rebuilt after an earthquake, materials like this would be priceless.
Anyone could come here. She wasn’t worried that Hughie and the rest would trace it back to her.
By the time she came back down, the pig had already been butchered.
Zeph had taken the lead, with Hughie and Jeremy helping out. Now, they were figuring out how to divide it.
Aside from Nicole, none of them could cook.
Zeph could take a life without blinking, but somehow still managed to burn plain rice.
Handling pork properly was out of their league.
So, they agreed to split the meat into four portions. As for the organs, they handed those to Nicole.
She didn’t argue. “Fine. I’ll cook it later. You guys can come eat.”
Hughie and Jeremy took half the pig. The other half was split between Zeph and Nicole.
He looked at her. “Which half do you want?”
“The front.”
The rear had more meat, but the head could be braised, and the bones were good for soup.
Zeph seemed to think he got the better deal, so he cut her a little extra anyway. Nicole noticed, but didn’t say anything.
They couldn’t do much back home, so she directed them to cut everything into smaller pieces. Then they packed

everything into black trash bags.
From the outside, no one could tell what was inside.
Hughie looked uneasy. “If we cook this, won’t people notice?”
“We’re on the top floor. Any smell will rise,” Nicole said. “Keep the doors and windows closed when you’re cooking. Even if some gets out, the rain will wash it away. Should be fine.”
Hughie grinned. “Alright. Let’s celebrate tonight.”
After everything they had been through, they needed something to look forward to.
“Why don’t we do it together? If we all cook separately, the smell’s going to be too strong. Might as well make it a group thing,” Jeremy suggested.
He liked having people around, and he was clearly trying to warm up to the aloof Zeph.
“We’re like one big family anyway.”
Hughie nodded.
“Nicole, you should cook. You’re the best out of all of us.”
Zeph didn’t object.
Nicole agreed.
“I’ve got some camp stew base. Let’s just do that.”
