Nicole shot the man a glance, then turned away and went to find Hughie and the others.

“Try these on,” she said, handing them the mink coats. “There are only ten in the store. Sizes might not be perfect, but honestly, I don’t know how else to spend all that money.”

Jeremy slipped one on and grinned. “Why does this feel like I’m being kept by some rich lady?”

Nicole gave him a flat look. “Sorry. You’re not my type.”

They joked back and forth when the man came over again.

“If you’re serious, we can work something out,” he said, lowering his voice.

All four of them were standing together, and he still approached. It didn’t look like he was planning anything shady.

Nicole explained the situation.

Hughie and Jeremy lit up immediately.

Hughie even grabbed a few grains and popped them into his mouth. “Tastes about the same as store-bought.”

“Don’t worry,” the man said, clearly excited. “The quality’s solid. I only have about five pounds on me right now, but if you want more, I can arrange it.”

The four of them stepped aside to talk it over.

Zeph kept his voice low. “We can do it, but we have to be careful. They might try something.”

The safest option was to split the deal into multiple trades.

They came to a decision.

Nicole went back. “We’ll take 250 pounds, but we do it in batches. Fifty pounds a day. We’ll meet here at the department store entrance.”

The man hesitated.

“I can’t decide that myself, but I’ll ask. Give me a minute.”

He hurried off.

Nicole set aside 100 thousand for the deal.

After buying everything they needed, she still hadn’t spent it all, so she grabbed one more mink coat to round it

out.

She brought compression bags and packed all the clothes and blankets tightly after paying.

People were starving out there, with no money and no food. And here she was, blowing through 100 grand like it was nothing.

The cashier stared at her as if she had just seen something unreal.

They had barely stepped out of the store when the man came rushing over.

“Our boss agreed. We can trade.”

He glanced toward a masked man nearby, holding a heavy sack. They exchanged a look and moved to a quiet

corner.

Zeph stepped forward to check the goods. After a moment, he nodded.

Nicole handed over a black trash bag she had prepared in advance. Inside was 20 thousand in cash.

The man stuffed it into his backpack and checked it quickly.

With the military maintaining order around the department store, no one wanted to risk getting shot over a deal.

After exchanging the money and goods, Nicole’s group set the time for the next trade and left immediately with the rice.

The boat was loaded down.

Hughie and Jeremy kept watch, scanning their surroundings. Zeph steered them away from crowded areas.

It was a longer route, but visibility was better. If anyone got close, they would see it coming.

Hughie, watching through binoculars, suddenly spoke up. “What’s that?”

Jeremy leaned in to look. Something floated in the distance, rising and sinking with the water.

“Looks like a body,” he said.

Nicole took the binoculars and watched for a moment. “I think it’s a pig.”
